What are folks using for a horn? I have an AFI 10036 that needs replacing. It worked OK for many years but wasn’t as loud as I wished. It stopped working last year. Before I spend another $100, I thought I’d send out a question to the group.

I have a hailer that doubles as a horn, although it’s a pain to get into
horn mode. Not something you want to do in an emergency.

I use a dual horn, by Ongaro. Not too great either. I also have a speaker
horn mounted aloft that amplifies fog signals, etc automatically from my
VHF. That is a great feature in the fog! Can also hit xmit button to get a
warning yelp if you need it. Highly recommended.

For a stand alone horn with a button I think you would need to go to an air
horn. Those work great and are very loud.

      Thanks Rodd,
I currently have a dual horn now. It’s pretty lame sounding and probably not legal for over 12M. An air horn needs a compressor where the horn is mounted. That’s OK for a power boat, but I don’t want to mount one on my mast. The loudest horn I can find that’s not run with air is the one linked below. I had that on my boat for years before it failed. Defender doesn’t sell them for some reason. That’s why I went with the dual horn two years ago when I replaced it. That was a mistake. I’ll probably replace it with the same one I had. Before buying the thing, I thought I’d see if anyone found a better horn. I’ll remove the dual horns and mount them in my dinghy.

I’ve had a VHF with a PA and automatic fog horn for years but I never bothered to hook it up. I replaced my VHF and bought a PA speaker which I’ll mount on my mast. While mounting the PA speaker, I figured I should replace the wimpy horn up there. You know how these projects go. Once you start something it’s hard to stop.

Yes, that’s the world of boating! One thing leads to the next, etc etc.,
and always to more money spent!
      Good luck with the horns.

So what’s wrong with a can of compressed air type of horn.
I keep one on my binnacle at all times in the coffee cup holder. Comes in handy in the middle of the night as you slide backwards thru the anchorage. It’s right there, you don’t have fumble around. One hold blowing the horn, the other hand trying to start the engine.

This is the first boat of mine on which I have not used
a conch horn. Just haven’t come across a clean,
unbroken shell yet. Meanwhile, I’ve got the next most
reliable horn I can think of, a red plastic
mini-trumpet that came with the boat. I always was a
sucker for the sound of a kazoo.

The boat also came with an canned-air horn, but it has
died from non-use. I actually can’t recall the last
time I sounded a horn on a boat.

You are so right Tor. Never honk your horn.

      Never honk your horn.

      And never yell.

When I need to get the instant attention of a crewmember at the opposite end of the boat, particularly when I’m on the bow working the ground tackle and my mate is at the helm chatting with the other crew or gazing off at something more interesting than me, I never yell. I just say, “psssst!” Even with the wind is howling and all kinds of distractions around, that sound somehow slices through like a knife and gets their attention every time, guaranteed. Very discreet, very effective.

      😉
