Friends of mine passed through St. Augustine a day or two ago and took
pictures of a sailboat that went aground in that inlet (
http://svholdfast.blogspot.com/). The name on the boat is Indulgence and
it appears to be a 40’ish ketch.
I believe there is one 424 with that name, but I don’t remember who is the
owner and where it is located. I really hope this did not happen to one of
us because it appears the boat is a total loss. I can’t tell from the
picture if it is a 424.

The St. Augustine Inlet is one I have always avoided because the channel
      moves so much.

It is not, thankfully, a 424. Keel separation is virtually impossible for
our boats. The cabin and port light layout is wrong as is the relative
      height of the masts.

      Sorry for those guys.

I’ve gone in and out of that inlet 10 or 12 times, always in daylight.
Aleays following the marks, never had issues.

People run into trouble there because the marks can be confusing, with
reds appearing to port of greens. They don’t believe the channel wanders
that much, but it does and the marks are reset regularly.

Approach slowly and make sure you understand what the channel does.

And that’s all I can say about that.

      Bob

Pardon the brevity. I’m typing this on my phone and I hate typing on my
      phone.

I tried to blow up the photo. It got a bit fuzzy but it sure looks like a 424.

If you want to find out a boat model and/or owner from the name you can go to this USCG web site.

Oops, my bad. It is definitely a 424 with center hatch, port lights, and
teak on coamings. The screen on my phone is not as good as the one on my
computer. Sorry. The lump off the bow is not the keel.

I should never type this stuff on my phone. John sold the boat in July
      of 2013 to David Gigas.

It would be interesting to know the owner plans to refloat and repair or it’s going for salvage.

I am still lurking here. That decision will be up to the insurer, and not
      the owner.

From what little I can see from the photo the boat seems to be aground on a soft bank and not rocks and the sea has been calm so the boat could be in pretty good condition.   Any update on the situation?

Is there a photo of this boat? So far, I’ve been unable to find a link to it.

      Hi Rich,

There was a link in the first post but I think the blog where the photos are posted has been updated and maybe they moved.

Go here http://svholdfast.blogspot.com and scroll down just a bit and if you don’t see the photos then on the right side of the screen “Blog Archives” click on “2014” and scroll down and they should be there. Two photos of the boat aground.
