I am beginning the process of installing my 6 hp Kubota generator in my aft lazerette.
Any suggestions as to layup, design of stringers, attachment of stringer, use of materials…… would be greatly appreciated.
I am sure this group will have lots of ideas.

      Alan,

Not to throw a wet blanket on an exciting new project, but with a generator in the lazarette will you still be able to access the steering quadrant and rudder post stuffing box for inspection and servicing? Or can you offset the generator enough to one side so that you can still climb in there, or make it easily removable? Just wondering because I had discounted mounting anything permanent in that space for this reason.

I currently have a 4.4 Westerbeke Genset mounted in this space. It is slightly offset to port, with a propane locker to strb. In front of the lazarette and beneath the front of the hatch, there is a vertical panel which can unscrew, thereby abetting the access. I have had no difficulties whatsoever accessing the quardrant for tightening the steering cables and repairing a rudder stop.

Incidently, the 4.4 runs and generates, but can be a pain to start. I am now using a HONDA 2000E instead and wish to get rid of the genset. It is FREE to anyone who wishes to remove it and all assoiciated hardware, although this will involve removing and reinstalling the solar panels and bimini top.

You should have told me that when I was aboard your boat in Deltaville….
Do you have any pictures of that setup….

Tor, I have thought about that and about to continue undeterred.

      Alan,
I don't know the size of your Kubota.  I expect it is smaller than my Northern Lights and Bill's Westerbecke.  For my installation, getting access to the rudder post stuffing box is a problem.

See this page and go down to the “Rudder Stuffing Box”
      http://www.svsarah.com/Sarah/ewUpradeMechanical.htm

As you can see, even with the help of a wee Welshman tightening the seal was very difficult.  The next winter I had the yard in Lagos re-pack the stuffing box with similar issues.
I recommend making a mockup of the generator in cardboard and then play with the placement to test your access to the rudder post.

As far as the installation goes, I haven't much to offer as I didn't do it.  As far as I can tell the installer just built a shelf strong enough to hold the genset.

I was going to glass in a couple of pieces of 3/4 in marine plywood using some 1708 Biaxle cloth. Make sort of an “H” shape. The ends or top of the “H” depending on how you look at it, will attach to and be bonded to the transom. A couple of pieces of 2 inch alumminum angle through bolted to the stringers for the mounts.
Finished, the engine will around 125 lbs….. should offset ( a little) the 300 feet of chain I have at the other end.
      thoughts?

I just repacked my rudder post this summer, so it should be awhile before I need to address that again. My thought was to moved the generator, either out or over if I need any serious work down there…. I am small guy anyhow – not as agile as I used to be but…..
