Just to let everyone know I haven't been spending all of my time here in Melbourne trying to figure out how to change the oil on my 4JH4-AE. I actually got some quality time doing more development on the Inventory and Maintenance Log Excel applications.
I've now integrated the two workbooks so that several of the applications people asked for are now available.
      1. Creating a part usage tracking for maintenance functions (e.g., Oil changes – yeah, that's what got me started)
      2. Creating a shopping list for items that fall below a specified minimum quantity.
The info on these changes and the download file is at http://www.svsarah.com/Sailing/ewInvMaint.htm

I don't recommend anyone who has been using the Inventory Workbook immediately start trying to use the new integrated applications. I'm still cleaning up a a few issues and those applications depend on using the Kits feature in the Inventory, which I don't believe is quite ready for prime time. However if you are interested you can look at the documentation on the website and use the Inventory and Maintenance workbooks I've created for Sarah to check out how it works and see if it is of any value to you.
With this new version the Inventory and Maintenance workbooks contain just data, no Visual Basic code. What this means is once you move your data to the new workbooks I can provide updates and fixes to the software without requiring changes to your data workbook.
To move an existing inventory to the new system you will have to copy and paste your “Inventory” worksheet to the new, blank workbook. There are several new columns in the new book, which you have to be aware of and work around. You can't just copy everything to the clipboard and then paste it directly into the new workbook. It has to be done a chunk at a time. If someone has a populated inventory workbook and wants to move it to the new system, send me the workbook and I'll transfer it and send it back to you. Its nothing a reasonably computer-literate person couldn't do for his or herself, but I probably don't know all of the issue that might come up buried in my code so it might be easier to just let me fight my way through. At least I have a rough idea of how the program works. I'll probably find and fix a number of problems doing this.

So although I don't recommend anyone jump into the Kits implementation as yet, I would like have someone using the new system and telling me if it works for them.

Of course I've developed this applications to satisfy a need I have. It may not be worth anyone else's time.

      John,

I use the Inventory Workbook regularly (and LOVE it!). Have not gotten to the Maintenance program yet, but intend to. For me to switch over to the new, combined workbook I’d have this additional issue: I have changed the Layout (including the drawing), Inventory Category Tables and Units table to fit my boat. I suppose I’ll just be able to copy/paste those columns, but thought I’d mention it.

I’m one of the guys who should probably wait until you’re completely finished tweaking the new, integrated applications before switching over, but will make the move when you say it’s ready.

Every time I find something with a few mouse clicks that would otherwise require tearing half the boat apart, I am grateful to you for sharing your creation with us. Thank you for these awesome programs.

      Thanks, Tor.
I appreciate the feed back. I think you are right not to try to move to the new system since you have a good deal of time invested in customizing your existing workbook. When I get this latest update is to the point where I think it is stable it may be worth the effort as after that you will be able to accept or fall back from my later software changes without having to re-work with your customization or change your workbook. I'll be willing to perform the conversion of your existing workbook to the new system whenever you think it is worthwhile. Most of the effort is just to remove the VBA code from your workbook and then insert blank columns into the Inventory worksheet where the new data will go. Your layout, categories and units pages shouldn't have to be changed. Of course I will probably find I changed something in that area that shouldn't have an impact, but does. That's why I'm willing to do the conversion. I know I'll find things that need to be fixed in the code.

Anyway if you want to see how it works, I've included my Inventory and Maintenance workbooks in the download file. One thing I found useful in the Maintenance Log has nothing to do with maintenance. I use it to log boat events that I may want to track for usage, for example:

      • dates when water tanks were switched
      • dates when propane tanks switched
      • dates when composting head emptied (holding tank for others)

BTW, anything the Inventory program doesn't do that you would like to see in an update?

I’ll check out the new application when I get a chance. Up to my elbows at present, and the approaching holidays do not lighten the load. (I like the idea of logging “boat events,” considering how easily I sometimes forget when I last did those things.) When the time comes, I’ll be grateful for any and all assistance moving over to the new program. I’d sure hate to lose the inventory I’ve logged to date, and the changes I’ve made in the other sections.

Offhand, I can’t think of anything the Inventory program does not do that I’d like it to – it seems to accomplish its mission admirably – but will let you know if something comes to mind.

      Now, back to the bilges…
