ParticipantI have approximately 550 pounds of lead bars available for ballast. Any Great Lakes P-424 sailors planning to head for the Carribean should consider adding this additional ballast to their fresh water sailed boats to avoid serious instability problems in the more buoyant salt water.

Hey Quent,
The 424 was DESIGNED to sail in salt water. I do not experience any “
instability” in the Caribbean.Joe,

ParticipantI had my 424 on Lake Ontatio for 6 years before heading to salt water. I noticed no difference at all ( well none that I could tell) ‘cept everything rusts faster.

If you bought this lead 5 years ago at $.50/lb, you made a pretty good investent, with today’s spot prices at $1.24/lb. Of course, if you bought at the peak in ’07 at $1.70, well, not as good. However, this is probably 1981 lead that you removed from your keel before you went cruising a couple of years ago, to make up for that extra weight from the washing machine and all the other cruising essentials you added onboard. For us fresh water sailors, moving too salt water just means we don’t have to raise our water line as much as everyone else does after we have loaded the boat with 3000 lbs of gear and spares.

Boundless #28PS: I am sure there are lots of locals building boats that would love to take that off your hands for a good price!!

ParticipantBought the lead a few years ago from a guy who decided to lighten up his centerboard equipped Bristol. I guess he was headed north to the Great Lakes.
Are you all sure that you want to take a chance? There is some large wind and waves in the tropics.
Act fast, this is a one day special deal!

ModeratorI’m with Joe. The 424 has successfully sailed around the world, and most
recently to Australia and New Zealand. Take the lead to a recycler for the
money. Lead’s up now because we need to make bullets.I’m pretty sure John Stevenson and Tor don’t have any aboard.

ParticipantNo bullets. Did my time at the stupid war de jour in the late 1960s and have not been a fan of bullets since. Did sell half my load to a guy who makes fishing lures last year. Apparently lead is either expensive if in convenient packages, or almost free if not convenient, like wheel balancing weights, and old sailboat keels.
Anyway, the deal expires in a few hours, after that you will all have to take your chances regarding stability in high salinity water because the deal was only good on April 1st!

SpectatorDoh… we got sucked into that one…!
I had a new guy start for me yesterday and today I was sending out his
welcome aboard email to everyone… I took a lot of liberties in describing
his professional background… 😉-=p
