So, I’m back, you know long time no chat. A little up date, after my motorcycle accident in May of 09 and no walking until Nov. 09 I moved back aboard and have been working on up grading my boat. So far rebuilt the pedestal, added radar, GPS, MFD, depth and speed, 3 new wenches, solent stay, topping lift, running lights, two new through holes(while in the water),and changed the running rigging on the mizzen.

It seams like more than that but that’s what it is so far.

I have just ordered the last few things that I need to rebuild the refer.
Two new hatches, Aerogel insulation, and Scad Sensistat (hope Pete reads this).
Now to my question, I’d like to put some LED lights into the box when I rebuild, any suggestions?
I’ve seen the led strip lights on the sailor solutions web site for $20ish but don’t know if those will hold up well in this application. Oh my plan is to use reed switches to turn the lights off when the hatch is closed.

Any suggestions, thoughts, or opinions welcome.

      Thanks

      Scott:

Welcome back to the list. You will have to fill us in on some of the project details one day.

As for the lights, I would just go for something waterproof designed to go under cars. Your local auto shop will have lots of choices or you can get them here for $3.50:

Nice idea. You won’t need much light. An automotive interior light
may do it at a low cost. These don’t use drivers rather just
resistors so no chance of radio noise.

Regarding the Sensistat I hope you enjoy it. I sold out my interest
in SCADtech but am still proud of the products

We purchased the LED, AA powered, hocky puck lights from West. They have stick ems on the back and 2 light intensities. We’ve mounted them in all of the lockers throughout Lady Leanne, including the fridge. You do have to click them on/off, but the ease of installation (no holes ,no wiring) makes them worthwhile. Cheap!

      Hi Dan,

Target or Walmart has the same things for 1/2 the price. Called ‘Sylvania
      DOT-it’.

That reminds me that I saw a product the has LEDs and is used on
lockers. It has a gravity (dare I say mercury) switch that turns it on
when the lid of the locker is opened. (I don’t know how they avoid
      lighting in a rough seaway).

That also reminds me that Sylvania has a product called the golden
dragon that has an infrared switch so you wave your hand under it to
turn it on/off. They sold for about $21 for three at Sam’s Club.
Here’s the SKU 046135724211 (Just happen to have the package in my office).

And that reminds me of the interview of the French octogenarian news
anchor, kinda of the Uncle Walter of France. Asked why octogenarians
seem to never stop talking he replied that after 80 years, everything
      reminds you of something else.

“Hockey puck” lights must have improved a lot recently. I bought several a few years ago and none of them worked very well. I stuck one up with its integral glue sheet and later tried to remove it. It would not come off easily and I didn’t want to pull the veneer off, so I left it alone. I put the others up with blue masking tape and eventually threw them all out, saving the batteries for my remotes back in Evanston.
