ParticipantWould like to replace original life lines with new, as well as add a gate on the port side. Any suggestions as to maker of wire or brand of fittings? Also need to buy two stanchion braces-could use suggestion here too. I plan on replacing with vinyl covered wire, as this has lasted 20 plus years and is more comfortable and pleasing to my eye.
Also, what size life lines do we have? 3/8″ with vinyl covering?

ParticipantRodd,
I replaced lifelines & gates last year, as well as all the standing rigging, etc, etc. I bought the hardware from Rigging Only (http://www.riggingonly.com) in Fairhaven, Mass. They seemed to offer the best selection, the lowest prices, and top quality materials. Browse through their web site and you’ll see what I mean. They’re particularly fussy about the source and quality of the wire they sell. They’re also extremely helpful when you have questions.
For lifelines, they’ll provide you with a precise measuring form and then send you the complete, pre-fabbed set ready to install. Mine went on without a hitch. BTW, I opted to eliminate the lower lifelines in the cockpit area. The combing is so high back there that a lifeline seems pointless.
Have fun,
Tor

Rodd,
The guys at Rigging Only (riggingonly.com) did a great job for me. I
sent them the old lines and they sent back new ones, re-using my Pelican
gate catches. You mark on the threads were they were tightened to
before you remove them. They will then shorten the new ones
appropriately so you have plenty of tightening available for later.
Great folks to work with.Pete

-1 for west marine rigging, and I even sorta work for them. I got a great deal, but I have some pretty severe rust after less than 1 year, sittin in a marina, never really seen saltwater. Plus (minus one more actually) they messed up the measurements and then tried to say I must have mis-measured it. Fro example, my measurement had Top @ ‘94’ bottom at 95. The bottom they sent was 4” too short. I said, well, if the ‘top’ one that is supposed to be 1” shorter than my measurement fits, but the one you sent is supposed to be longer is still is WAY too short, how does that work?

Rodd,
I think the attached invoice speaks to most of your questions.
I used Innovative Marine because I know the owner, Ted Weyrauch, personally. He and my son, David, were partners for about five years operating the business out of the Nichols yard in Mamaroneck, NY. David left the business a few years ago to pursue a career in electrical engineering and Ted moved to Florida.
Before my lifelines were fabricated I filled out a measurement sheet (of the properly adjusted old lifelines in place) that Ted had sent me and I also sent him the old lifelines. The new ones fit perfectly. At Ted’s recommendation about a half inch of bare wire was exposed at each fitting to avoid trapping water and permitting inspection.
I don’t know whether Ted would offer the discount he gave me but you are welcome to mention my name if you decide to contact him.
Before contacting Ted I investigated the possibility of purchasing the lifelines through West Marine. The fact that I would have to do the swaging myself using their hand swage tools discouraged me from going that route.
Let me know if you have additional questions and I will try to answer them.
