I highly recommend taking down the vinyl insulation and removing the foam
insulation backing. Covering it up with paint won’t get rid of the mold
that is already growing on the backing and in the foam. It is a haven for
black mold. Like Patrick said, it was incredibly disgusting when we took
it down. If you look back at our flickr feed from a couple years ago when
we took it down, I wore protective covering and a mask. Black mold can be
highly toxic when exposed for long periods of time especially for people who
have allergies and breathing problems. I have serious allergies and am very
susceptible to sinus infections so I needed to wear a mask. I wound up
getting a bad sinus infection afterwards anyway. An added benefit, our boat
never smells like mold any longer. Never. Even after not being opened up
and aired for a couple weeks. To answer Dan’s question, I think we used a couple quarts. Once the
insulation is removed and you are down to bare hull the paint covers well.
It only took a couple coats.
And yes, we do have all of the portlights we removed. Were you thinking of
the aluminum ones or the plastic ones? We had both on Deep Playa.
thanks

ParticipantI am after the long (21″ +-) aluminum ones that open. These are in the head, shower and above the stove on our boat. I had one sand blasted, zinc chromated and painted and it looks good enough for now (putting $ in other places right now). I’d be happy to pay for shipping and contribute to the cruising kitty if these are the right ones. P said he would send me pix later.

ParticipantTell the portlights that they’ll spend their golden years in Hawai’i. Yes, these are the ones I would like. I’ll take both if you have two.
I plan to refinish them and replace the ones presently installed that are suffering from broken tangs and hinges. This will do for now as I invest in things like a traveler; haul out with bottom job, new paint and other assorted below the waterline stuff.
How can I reimburse you?

ParticipantInterestingly, I never saw any mold when I peeled off the vinyl. It was just dried and crumbly foam. The boat’s been in Hawai’i since new and the tropical climate has not generated any of the black stuff you found. Is the soggy reputation of the Northwest a culprit here?

SpectatorOur tangs have been breaking off our hatches so refinishing these may not
get you much to be honest. Let me make sure I have two worth sending. I’ll
contact you offlist to arrange to ship them to you.The boat had a lot of leaking (damn that teak eyebrow trim) so that water
and the months and month our boat would sit between uses lead to most of the
problems I believe.

RichCarterParticipantThat’s a Bowmar. I bought a set of these years ago to replace the original
large opening ports Pearson installed. It looks like the plastic was
replaced at some point. The caulking material doesn’t look like what Bowmar
used. The ports came painted with a good quality paint, but like everything
else it needs to be repainted every decade or so. I’ve had no issues with
mine after I installed them about 10 years ago.Rich

ParticipantPatrick,
What did you replace your old ones with? I know about the Newfound
metals products for the 5×12 ports, but have not seen anything to
replace these longer ones.Pete
