For ketch rigs, does anyone know the purpose of the wooden plywood plate that is screwed to the front of the wood beam supporting the mizzen step? This is directly over the engine. Will removing this plywood ‘cover’ give any access to the mizzen step/wiring from below? I don’t hear any hollow sounds when tapping on the cover.

I would like to pull new wires in the mizzen without unstepping the mast. The existing wiring (radar and lights) that exits under the beam seems really tight. I’m hoping there’s not a lot of caulking where the wires pass thru the mizzen step.

      Any ideas?

I know that on my mizzen step it’s just a 1 inch (or so) pipe that goes down through the step. When I added the wind generator and a mizzen spreader light and an ethernet cable for the WiFi I added another pipe to pull the new cables though. I drilled a 1 inch hole to put in a piece of 3/4 pipe. There’s certainly enough room. You will need howere an extension of the drill bit because that beam is REALLY thick.
Not sure if that answers your question.

Alan, what system are you using for the wifi, and how well is it working for you?

On mine there is no plywood plate. The two holes are straight through
the beam, top to bottom, and are indeed tight for all the wires that
      need to go through them.

OK, it looks like at some point the mizzen will have to be unstepped to bore a second hole. I still don’t have a clue why Pearson screwed a wooden board to the support.

I have the plywood tongue that sticks out toward the engine from under the
mizzen also. The only reason that it appears to be there is to support part
of the wiring that went to the engine. I don’t think that it is necessary
especially after the repower. Now my wiring harness is about half of what
      was there with the W60.

Hey, I have that plate and all it does is support my wiring harness.

Years ago I made an effort to silence the iron jib. There’s a space behind the instruments that has a small bulkead above the engine cover. The panel has two access doors. I found it was a natural resonator for sound. I put a horizontal piece of wood at the bottom of the mizzen step that blocks off the space. This helped quiet the engine. Maybe the piece of plywood you describe was added by a previous owner for the same purpose. The shelf also makes the space usable for storage of manuals such as the engine manual and other various owners manuals.

I have a mizzen step even though I have a sloop. There is no difference between my rig and the tall ketch other than the missing mizzen. I would guess cutters and later sloops have the same arrangement even though their mainmasts are stepped a couple of feet forward but I can’t be sure. Anyone out there with a cutter want to comment on what you have?
