ParticipantI just wanted to let every one know how nice this
MOnday is compared to last Monday.
Last Monday it was quiet here…no one was sending any
posts. I couldn’t help but think maybe every one else
was out sailing and I was stuck working or what ever
it is I do here…. online most of time reading
sailing forums.
SO…. glad everyone is back…

ModeratorHi Alan,
Glad we can amuse you. We weren't sailing last Monday. I, for one, was upside down in the bilge replumbing my new holding tank. Or something else equally nasty.
But good to hear from you!

ParticipantI spent yesterday replacing the 1.5″ hose for the
port midship deck drain. The one that goes through the
galley shelves and ends up under the aft bunk.
I once wrestled a 400 lb grizzly bear and didn’t feel
as bruised and as beat up as I do today….
Glad I did it though because as I gently twisted the
hose at the thru-hull, the hose just gave out. The
bottom side where you could not see was rotten and the
wires inside were all rusted out…. another disaster
avoided.a

ModeratorI know how you feel – I had to wrestle the head discharge hose to a different point necessitating disconnecting the joker valve housing, pulling the hose up 1 ring at a time through sheer force, then when able, pulling it back down to fit the holding tank top.
Yuck.

ModeratorThere is no way. All I can say is when the cover comes off, projects are put on back burner while I sail.

I replaced both starbord side scupper hose this weekend and the manual bilge hose too.
in the process I found that the plywood wall in the forward section of the aft lazerette had been pressed against the steering quadrent – no damage to the hardware, but the wood has been neatly chafed away in that area. I cut that section out to give it clearance and coverd the hole. Something to look for next time you are back there.Three weeks ago my buddy droped a pipe wrence into the bilge. I managend to get down there and retrieve it – need to find one of those 5’3″ willing petite girlfriends…… Big guys dont fit down there too well….
Next week it is time to drain the 2 year old fuel – bleed the line and see if I can wake the red beast.
Any advice on starting a Westerbeke w-60 that has not run for nearly 2 years? Oil is new, all filters too…..Batteries have a good full charge.alan P <> wrote:

ParticipantOne thing that I have found extremely useful (especially after having bled the system) is to connect jumper cables directly from the batteries or from my battery charger directly to the glow plugs.
I have struggled for hours bleeding, trying to start, re-bleeding, letting the battteries recover, trying to start… over and over. Then I hooked up my battery charger straight to the glow plugs and it started in seconds.
The connections to my glow plugs are good, but I think there is enough line drop that they don’t get blazing hot.
Disclaimer: This is very hard on your charger, the plugs draw a LOT of current, and it is probably no good for the (difficult to find at a reasonable price) plugs; but I was ready to set fire to the boat, so…

RichCarterParticipantLeaving the engine for two years without turning it over is a very bad idea, but the W60 is a robust engine. I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t just startup. Having spent many hours praying over my old engine, I have some suggestions that might make that first startup a little easier.
Don’t change the fuel filters yet. The W60 is a bear to bleed and you don’t want to touch the fuel system until you know that the engine runs. Once you’ve started the engine and know it runs OK, you can address the filters.
Change the oil and filter.
You might consider pulling the glow plugs first. With the glow-plugs out, it will be very easy to crank the engine. It won’t start, but moving the pistons and circulating some oil will help. With the glow-plugs out, you can test them to make sure they are OK before reinstalling them. Offhand, I can’t remember if you can pull all four without moving the high-pressure fuel lines. If you can’t pull all four, pull what you can and inspect and test them. If you connect one to a 12V battery, it should get hot.
After turning the engine over and reinstalling the glow plugs, put the throttle all the way up, preheat the engine for 30 seconds, and crank the engine. It should start within 10 seconds. Don’t worry about the engine racing. There’s a governor.
If all goes well, your engine will start and you’ll be in business. If the fuel has set in the tank for two years, you probably have contamination in there, water and probably slime. If you see what looks like coffee grounds collecting in the bottom of your fuel filter, you have slime growing in the tank. There are commercial companies that clean tanks.
Don’t forget to check the transmission fluid and V-drive lube oil. Make sure the V-drive lube isn’t milky in color. You should probably change both.
