      I finally got my new mast step from Rig-Rite after ten (or is it eleven?) weeks. I sent them the old steel step as a model the first week of April and the anodized aluminim version arrived on June 22. It is a beautiful piece and it fits, but the customer service was like a tour of Purgatory.

      I had to call Dick Conti a second time to intercede for me (luckily the Church has declared Purgatory no longer exists so I didn’t have to pay an indulgence). I called him and later the same day the Rig-Rite secretary called me to tell me it was shipping that day. Had it been sitting in their shipping department for several days or had the anodizer been sitting on it waiting for enough jobs to make it worth his while to set up the process? Who knows.

      At any rate, DON’T USE RIG-RITE.

      Hi Norris Larsen. I hope you don’t mind sharing your mast step/shoe stories. I’ve known and work with Tor Pinney on Silver Heels, for several years as we were in Green Cove Springs Marina together. I’m re-rigging Silver Girl, and the original mast step/shoe was very badly corroded. I’ve had a local machinist use the existing plate to fashion a new shoe, and I’m getting ready install it. Two problems: how to install the new shoe so that I’m really close to the original fore/aft, midship and level line. I had to grind of the old lag screws heads to remove the old shoe and I using their shanks as a guide in the slots of the new shoe, but how does one assure the shoe is level (the work yard doesn’t use a level to stand the boat), and plumb for the mast re-insertion. Second problem: since I can’t get the lag screws out of the step the mast sits on, I don’t know the length of the replacement lag screws. I would appreciate any info.       The lag screws on my main mast step were 3/8″ x 2 1/2″. I had to grind off a couple of the heads as well, but I was able to remove the screws by using vice grips on the remaining shank. They came out pretty easy that way.

      I had to do the same thing. Grind off the heads of the bolts. Pry off the
      mastep. Use vice grips to back out old bolts.
