      New 424 Cutter Mainsail

      Author:

We blew out Jubilee’s main sail last summer. The sail was too old to consider fixing, so we bought a slightly used J105 sail from Bacon Sails. It fit ok and we used it for the rest of the season. (Although, there were a couple of people who let us know that our boat was not a J105.)

After getting several quotes from sail makers, we decided to go with Far East Sails (Hong Kong). We started the ordering process in early September and received the sail in late October (after Jubilee had gone to bed for the winter).

We hoisted the sail for the first time last weekend. I like it. The sail cloth appears to be as advertised, the seams are all evenly stitched, with no missed stitches, leather chafe patches, reinforced corners/reefing points, etc. We e-mailed them the Pearson insignia, and while not perfect, it’ll do. I think they did a good job and I think we did a good job measuring. The only issue was that they don’t supply battens, which we have had to source locally. I will admit we were hesitant to buy sails on line, but so far, so good. We’ll see how she sails…

      Hauber,

Sounds like a happy outcome. Do you mind sharing what you paid
for the sail, freight and battens?

I purchased a new, fully battened main with cars for a Strong Track system from Mack Sails.  Don’t have the invoice handy but it was around $3000.   I got a quote from Lee Sails at the same time and their price was about the same.

      Hi Tor,

Total was $2,228, which included sail numbers, Pearson insignia. 2 reefing points, sail bag, full batten pockets, nylon batten holders, shipping, freight. etc.  Only extras are the battens which should be @ $130.

We have decided to keep the J105 sail since it is in excellent shape and would make a good spare.  Bacon Sails were great to deal with as well.

That sounds like a pretty good deal.
The sail I got from Mack did have a few extras over this so at the end of the day might have been comparable. The battens were included from Mack so that’s another $130. .   I got 3 reef points which added a bit more, not sure how much.   Also full length battens and cars for the Strong track.
My total if I recall was about $1000 higher than your sail so even with the extras sounds like you saved several hundred.
Now you have to report back in a couple of years and tell us how the sail it doing.   🙂

Thanks, Sean. I was just curious. Sounds like you did well. Main thing is you’re happy with what you got.

I had a new main built here (http://www.GCSmarina.com) a couple of years ago, by the Irish Sail Lady in St. Augustine. Same price as yours and I’m likewise happy with it. I know they cut their rates to the bone to match Asian prices. One extra perk I get here is free sail storage at their loft whenever I want it, like when I store the boat.

Mack uses some pretty high quality cloth as well.

Glad to hear that.   Have not had a chance to hoist the sail yet.   I still have my new main in storage waiting for that wonderful day when I haul the boat back to the water.

I bought two sails recently from Doyle, a fullbatten main with tides-track and a 150% genny. Each cost $5000. I’ll have to admit that the boat sails much better with new sails and they are well made, but I’m not sure they are worth twice the price.
