      Alan,

My “plan” (i.e., trend of thinking at the moment) is to depart from Beaufort, NC for the Windward Islands in mid/late-November, heading first for Bermuda, but bypassing it if the wind heads me and just veering southward instead. Not sure about a first West Indies landfall. Maybe St. Martin if they’re not too greedy about entry costs these days. I haven’t looked into that yet.

Taking advantage of the Carib 1500 weather forecasting makes some sense, but weather forecasts are available anyway. Besides, bad weather’s going to get you if it comes, forecast of not. Personally, I’d prefer not to have so many boats around me offshore. Seems like there’d be a lot of radio chatter from that group, plus an increased risk of collision, or at least close encounters of the bothersome kind. In the end I suppose it’s just a matter of personal inclination. I don’t think I’d feel the same sense of adventure following a herd across an ocean.

      Tor,

Stay in touch..we may be able to hook up somewhere in the Windwards. I’ll be launching Half Moon in Trinidad early November and sailing north, probably as far as Antigua and then returning to T&T.
We left from Beaufort also, but went via the Bahamas. Easting against the Trades is tough, especially during the Christmas Winds. My only advice to you is to get as far south as soon as you can. If you can get to Antigua by Dec. 1 then the strong winds don’t effect you as much as when you are still beating eastward against them.

      Fair Winds,
      Joe,

Thanks, Joe. I lived aboard in the Lesser Antilles for 8 years previously, and used to deliver boats to and from there for a living back in the day. Have always made my easting north of the trades (except maybe a few times crossing Anegada Passage from the BVI) and have a few amusing stories about Christmas Winds.

I’m planning to spend extra time in Martinique this winter. Will keep an eye out for you.

      Reef Early,
