I just received a quote for offshore insurance from Jackline. 2700 for 80K boat. How did everyone else make out with their search?

      Alan,
What coverage area did you ask for.  My insurance for the US East Coast (90K value) including the Bahamas (from Markel) was a little less, but not much.  I've had my insurance with Markel since 2005.

Attached is a copy of the “indication”.
I am planning on doing an offshore passage. Starting from and going to are TBD.

      Allen,

Markel would not cover me, as they need a year before offering offshore coverage.

My insurance guy (Smithwick and Mariners) found me Traverelers. Maine to Bahamas for 1300 with the requirement I be north of NC June 15 and out of the water between 10/15 and 5/15. I had to purchase a special Bermuda endorsement for 750.

No one else would touch me for the trip to Bermuda for less than 3500 and requiring experience crew. As I said, Markel required that I be with them a year before covering an offshore passage.

I’ve heard those requirements before. When I called, I told them I had personally done 3 offshore trips in the past 8 months. None of those in my boat of course. I wonder if that is why the difference. I have not yet read all the exclusions for being north or south of whatever yet. I may have them exclude Floriduh when I next speak with them.

It looks like the exclusion zone is between July 1 and Oct 31 and need to be north of Jacksonville Fla or south of Grenada. (10 deg 50′ and 31 deg N)
What I am trying to find out is, do I become totally self insured then or just will pay a large ( almost double) deductible?
If I am there, am I still insured for claims not having to do with a Named storm?

      Alan,
Only your insurance agent can answer those questions.  My understanding of the Markel policy (I actually haven't looked at the Ts&Cs for several years – so I can be at much greater risk than I think) is that I am uninsured for any potential claims in the exclusion zone and time period.  It isn't that Markel would not pay a claim, but they are not obligated to do so (I guess that is the same as saying they wouldn't pay).
That's one of the reasons I'm currently in Charleston and not in Florida.

Since I am a lawyer and in the insurance business I cannot resist.

If you are in the water during the no-no time, or in the no-no zone, you have no coverage. Otherwise you are entitled to make a claim. Doesn’t mean they’ll pay. And of course if you have a bank loan and you either are in the water during the no n o time, or in the no no zone, it’s a no no. Which means the bank can accelerate your loan.

The question I am interested in is, if I am in the NO-NO Zone during the excluded time and damaged by let’s say a fire or other calamity and there was no damage due to a Named storm, am I still covered and can I make a claim?
As I read the policy, it says damage due to a named storm.
I guess I will have to wait for the answer from Jackline.

      Alan,
I have jackline and I am covered for everything except damage by a named storm, when in the no no zone during no no period. hence my boat is on the hard in Trinidad now, until Nov. 1. In certain areas you can get coverage at a premium and double the deductable. There is also an additional premium for being in the caribbean.

The policy I attached to last nites e-mail, covered me for the Carib and Florida. Maybe I should have them excluded until I get there. It also includes Bermuda and the West Indies.

I don’t know about Bermuda specifically, but I pay an additional $650 to be covered south of the Turks and Caicos.

The quote I got was for 2777, which included 397.00 for protection and indemnity coverage???
      The areas are:
Coastal waters from and including Maine and Florida, Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas, Caribbean Sea
and West Indies, subject to applicable Travel Restrictions (form JL3000-0705)

SO many that additional fee is already included?

I expect so….I originally just took coverage for Maine to Florida and Bahamas incl, T&C, then added Caribbean when I got there, and that was the additional $650/year.

      Alan,
You really need to be directing these questions to Al Golden.
However it is a good idea to wait until you are sure you are going to leave before adding coverage outside of your normal sailing area.  Last year, when I was getting ready to spend the winter in the Bahamas I kept my coverage for just the Chesapeake Bay then added the additional coverage for the Bahamas about a month before departing.  It cost the same as if I had taken the full area coverage from the start, but then if I had not left the Chesapeake I would have been out the extra premium for coverage I didn't need.  Of course it didn't save me any money, because I made the trip.

Without having seen the policy, I would venture to say, if you are in the water in a no no zone, you’re sunk – figuratively speaking.

OK, here’s the scoop from Reese Scott of IMIS .
If I am IN the NO NO zone DURING the exclusion period, I am covered for anything except damage from a Tropical storm (by their definition, which includes Nor’easters).
If I am outside the NO NO Zone, either during or not during the exclusion time period, and get whacked by a TS, then the deductible goes to 4%.
