      GOOD MORNING, ALL~
As a matter of general maintenance on my W-60, I intend to
swap out both the oil and transmission coolers. I as I recall, there was a
discussion last Winter regarding this issue, and someone volunteered a
source for these parts. If any knows of this source, or can contribute any
      thoughts, please advise, thanks, BILL

      Joe,
The wooden block you reference – is that the support the rudder shaft
passes through just above the stuffing box (
      http://www.svsarah.com/Sarah/Images/PlasticBushing.JPG)? There should be a
plastic bushing that keeps the shaft from wobbling. As you can see in my
picture that bushing tends to ride up out of the hole in the support. It
just needs to be pushed down periodically. At least one owner used a hose
clamp on the shaft to hold the bushing in place.
With regard to the stuffing box, have you tried to tighten it? I had a
persistent leak from the stuffing box. Initially the leak was stopped by
tightening the stuffing box, but eventually I had to repack it. If you
don’t have anything installed in the aft lazarette that shouldn’t be a
difficult task. I have a Northern LIghts genset in the lazarette and I
have to hire a boatyard munchin for any and all service on the stuffing
      box.

If I recall correctly, the bottom of the rudder post sits in a bearing at
the bottom of the skeg. You should be able to disassemble everything on
the top of the rudder and let it sit on the lower bearing. I’ll be out

      at

my boat later this evening and look at it a little more closely to

This does also assume the skeg or bottom bearing on your boat hasn’t come
loose and is ready to fall off.

hate auto spell?? not sure I understand. ALSO, LENCO does not do
transmission coolers, or if they do they do not advertise it.

We had pulled into Titusville just before Christmas,1998 and I checked the trans fluid level. The color was milky pink–water in the trans! There was a machine shop in, I think it was Ft. Lauderdale, that provided a wide variety of coolers for different purposes. Their machinists built coolers from off the shelf parts. I called their shop manager and as I thought about it later, I sensed he had not understood exactly what we needed for Easy Reach’s W60. I made  a machine drawing of the cooler and faxed it to him. On our subsequent phone conversation he said that had misunderstood and would assemble one following my drawing. I don’t remember how I found out about that shop and my source left me with the impression that it was the only source where I could get a cooler. We had to wait two weeks because the machinists were off for the holidays. We had not further problems with water leakage into the trans.

The original cooler on my W60 was manufactured for Westerbeke by Sen-dure. They offered a replacement on an exchange basis.

      Bill,

When my transmission cooler failed in the Exumas a few years ago, I
contacted the guy who had rebuilt Silverheels’ transmission back in 2007:

      Cass’s Transmission-Marine Service
      4451 Sunbeam Rd, #1, Jacksonville, FL 32257
      (904) 731-0060

He got one from some outfit in Fort Lauderdale and shipped it to me at Black
Point Settlement. Cass has specialized in marine transmissions for decades.
That’s all he does. He’ll know where to get what you need.

I can second Cass for Velvet Drive service. That is, if he is still in
business. When he re-built my VD in 2011 (due to damper plate failure) he
was semi-retired and pushing 80 years old (my guess). Since he did an
excellent job on my VD, I’ve had no reason to contact him since then.
