ParticipantHi Quent: I live in Oriental and have the 424 “MOJO”. We have a very good anchorage just past the breakwater, good holding and there is a free dinghy dock. It gets a little crowded this time of year with folks going South. There are two Oriental Marinas both with great facilities and accepting transit boats. Actually the original Oriental Marina answers 16 for both locations. We have a free town dock(for 48 hours) that is very popular but it has no electricity or water and can usually only accomodate 2 or 3 boats. “The Bean” is the local coffee shop right on the water front. The “Tiki Bar” at the Oriental Marina is the local watering hole. For boat stuff try The Waterway Provisioning Co on the waterfront. We have a West Marine but it’s about 1 mile hike from the water front. Same for groceries, the Town and Country is about a mile walk. New hot spot eatery is The Silos, great Italian and Pizza. M&M Cafe is on the waterfront and is always good. You can get fuel at the original Oriental Marina. If you need parts, service, or a haul out try Deaton Yacht Service on Whitaker Creek. Enjoy your stay it’s a fantastic boating village.

ParticipantHi Jack-
Thanks for the great info. We are anchored in Bonner Bay, about 18 miles from Oriental, so we willbe there early tomorrow, maybe! We will try the free dock, then the anchorage, then a marina.
Loveto see MOJO and compare notes!

ParticipantHi Quent: I’m having the dreaded knee surgery at 11:00 am tomorrow, something about old age! So much for me ever dancing with The Chipindales. My boat is across the bridge at Pecan Grove but I think it’s going to be about a week before I feel like moving around on deck. The free dock is pretty accessable during the week but it does get taken on the week ends. Don’t let the large cruise ship “Spirit of America” surprise you at the Oriental Marina. It’s been stopping several times during the year and arrived today. Again have a great time in our city!

ParticipantHey Jack,
We’re tied up at Deaton’s in Oriental at the moment. We’re in need of a new fly wheel and I heard about a local 424 owner repowering recently. From what I’ve been told the owner kept the old Westerbeke and I was wondering if you knew who he might be.
I’d like to get in touch with him and see if he’s gotten rid of the Westerbeke as of yet.
Good luck with the surgery.

ParticipantHi Quent: Small world! I work with Deatons, in fact I’ve been here 16 years. Myself and my partner (Rich Gahan) own the yacht brokerage end of things. The guy’s name is Linus that repowered with the Cummins. Ask Buddy Floyd our service manager, Linda McClain the secretary, or Gary Dale one of our mechanics. They’ll be able to give you some info on Linus’ old engine. I’ll catch up with you in a couple of days when I’m moving around.

ParticipantAlsa, regrets to Oriental. We flew by at 9AM today. The wind was so good, and with rain in the forcast, we decided to make south today. Currently lying Morehead City. Hope to visit Oriental on return in the Spring. You guys have a great winter!

I think that was me. Gary called me and I told him that I left most of the engine with TAD, I think that he has checked with them.
