I just read an article in CW that advocates bare aluminum masts and booms.
The painted sticks on my 424 are showing some bubbling around the fittings, which will have to be addressed. My question: did Pearson paint all the spars or was this done by a PO?

I think Pearson ordered them painted when they built them. I repaint mine every five years or so with one-part polyurethane. You can go nuts having them custom painted by a yard if you want ($$$). 2-part paint will last longer but will still need re-coating eventually.

Blistering around the fittings is unavoidable. There is probably something you can coat the fittings with before attaching to the mast that will help this. My rigger advised me to remove my winches and put a sheet of mylar under there. It’s on the list just below everything else that works but can be better. If you remove any fasteners, you should at least coat these with some kind of goop before reinstalling.

My masts are plain, unpainted, and surely always were. I prefer it. Nothing
      to maintain.

My original masts were bare and had external halyards. Previous owner had
them painted with Awlgrip and put the halyards inside sometime prior to
1993.The paint has held up quite well though I have had to retouch quite a
few dings and scratches over the years.

I agree with Tor, if it ain’t broke …
To me the only reason to paint the spars is for cosmetic purposes. I had a
badly pitted aluminum mast on my previous boat. I must had a lot of excess
cash in my pocket back them because I had a boat yard paint it. They
etched the mast with an acid bath, then primed and painted it with
Alwgrip. It looked great even 15 years later, but I’m sure it would have
been fine without the paint. It would just looked a little older.

I’m not sure I would agree with the CW caution on painting, as long it was
done expertly. It’s just not a necessity.

The spars on my 424 are covered with something that may be grey awlgrip.
My guess it was done by a PO rather than Pearson, but I have no way of
      telling.

Odd, I’m sure mine were painted when the boat was built. Maybe it was an option when you ordered the boat.
