      Seeking advice,

I pulled my V-drive and took it to Jersey City for a rebuild. The lower seal (to the prop shaft) was passing oil even when not running. After removing the drive, I noticed the prop shaft moved up and down about a quarter of an inch and tiny bit side-to-side. Is this normal or does the bearing surface through the hull need some repair?

The cutllass bearing was replaced two years ago and I was not paying attention to play in the shaft at the time. Easy Reach, hull #206, is also equipped with a PYI dripless box.

      Thanks,

      Norris Larson

      Hi Norris,

The shaft, especially with a dripless seal, can move quite a bit. The
V-drive coupling is what keeps it in line with the cutlass bearing.
Remember, once you disconnect one end of a shaft it will move – I would
actually tie it up so that it doesn’t put undue stress on the cutlass
bearing and strut. It’s heavy and provides quite a bit of leverage on the
strut it wasn’t designed to take.

With the coupling disconnected from the V-drive, it is normal to have some play in the prop shaft, as much as an inch or more.

      Supporting prop shaft:

I did suport the shaft with a line and now have a bllock of wood underneath it resting on the V-drive containment basin. But thanks for the tip.
