      Hello guys-
Went to the Annapolis Boat Show yesterday. Couldn’t find a boat that I liked as well as our P-424. Not just were they really a lot of money, they also seemed less comfortable, or a bit strange in one way or another.
In the event Clairebuoyant and I stay together, I’m thinking my focus will be on her cosmetics. To that end, I’d like to ask if anyone has used powder coating to refinish the aluminum Bomar opening port castings. In the past I’ve painted them but I’m looking for a longer lasting treatment. If it’s been done, any information on provider, cost and outcome would be appreciated.
      Thanks!

Aloha Quent:  I refinished the original 4 opening ports on our boat.  I first had them sandblasted, then powder coated in the (close to) original color.  I ordered new tinted  (I can’t remember the particular plastic type I ordered on line from Interstate Plastics) material for the lenses and easily cut them to fit.  I’m very pleased with the results as they look as new.  Total cost of the project  for all four ports was $150-$175.  Hope this helps.

      Hi Dan
Thanks for the information. There are a few places around here that appear to do mostly motorcycle and automotive jobs. I’ll take a couple extra ports I have and get a price.
l assume that yours are holding up okay?
      Best regards,

I took my ports to a place that does powder coating for auto/bike parts.  They did a great job.  It’s been two years in Hawaiian sun and salt with no bad effects.  Next on the list are the hatch frames and the supports for the main traveler.

These newer boats can sleep an army of folks but have no storage. The space we have under and around the cockpit is used as cabin space, leaving noplace to stow your stuff. Most of these owners use their aft cabin as a “garage” for storing stuff. You can’t get in and out of there however. We can only comfortably sleep two couples and perhaps an extra couple of guests for a weekend, but we do cruise in comfort. I carry 6 beech chairs, a couple of beach umbrellas, a folding table, a hammock, three fenders, extra sails, 6 offshore life vests, dock lines, two anchors and rodes, fishing gear, buckets, water skis, bosun’s chair, dock lines…..

Where do you put that stuff if you don’t have ample lockers?

You can paint your hatch frames with 1-part poly. It will look good for a few years and need repainting again. Powder coating sounds like the way to go but I always thought it too expensive. You’d have to disassemble the hatches to coat and remove the lense. That sounds like a PIA.

I’ve tried both paint and powder coating in my refit; paint on the aluminum bodied windlass using a two part aluminum primer and several coats of Petit Easypoxy then powder coating on the Bowar ports.

The powder coating seems much tougher than the paint and looks very good overall but the finish is not perfect.   On several of the ports there are a few bubbles and pitting in the finish.  The port is fully coated and sealed with the powder coating so the problem appears to be cosmetic only.  I went back to the shop that did the work and the owner said they ran them through the process a couple of times but usually see this when coating parts from boats.   They weren’t sure why, speculated that there might be some residue from the salt water in the metal that caused the bubbling.

The cosmetic issues were pretty minor and not very noticeable so no regrets.

Cost for 6 ports was about $300.
