      Alan, a quarter is about the same diameter as the metal backing plate.  The plate I'll bet is in the bilge or under the velvet drive.  It is stainless so you won't find it with a magnet.
      It fell out when the pad wore away. 
      I used the sander disc on my grinder to reduce the thickness of the pad.

      where can I buy the entire assembly-looking on the web site provided,I wasn’t sure which of the many items listed it was.Also,what do you mount it to?
