I’ve got a PSS Dripless Seal on my bronze prop shaft, in lieu of the
original stuffing box. Been on there about 5 years. Now I’m changing
Silverheels’ cutlass bearing and the stainless steel retainer puck
refuses to budge. (Yes, I’ve removed both pairs of recessed set screws.)
Anyone know a trick for getting that thing off the shaft… other than
banging it with a hammer for 2 hours? (Hint: It’s got a pair of rubber
O-rings inside, riding on the shaft, so a heat torch is out.)Thanks,
Tor

In lieu of feedback, I just figured it out. FYI (in case any of you ever
have to deal with the same situation), here’s what got that PSS Shaft
Seal “stainless steel retainer puck,” which they call the rotor, freed
up and off the shaft. I shot it with PB Blaster, squirting some into the
set screw holes, and let it sit overnight. Then put a chain wrench on it
and, with the shaft locked, got it turning on the shaft and was able to
work it, cranking it back & forth, forward until it was up against the
shaft coupling. Finally, removing the chain wrench, I was able to
gradually tap both parts off the end of the shaft with a hammer. Great
fun in tight spaces.Since the petroleum-based PB Blaster will degrade the O-rings inside the
rotor, as soon as I had it off I took them out and washed them. I’ll
grease them with Dow 111 when I reassemble everything.Tor

ParticipantTor, the O-rings are $2 parts. You are really going to reinstall them after the punishment you put them through?

Chuck,
The original O-rings look perfectly fine, but I’ll replace them if I can
find them locally. PYI apparently doesn’t sell the PSS Shaft Seal
O-rings separately. Instead, they want $91 ($130 retail!) for the
complete rebuilt kit, which includes a new bellows and other components
I don’t need. I just emailed them back this morning ranting about
aftermarket gouging (IMHO that kit is grossly overpriced and the O-rings
should be available for a few bucks). Maybe my email will embarrass them
into sending me a couple of O-rings – just to shut me up.🙂

Participant$91, that does seem pretty steep. I’ll see if I can find out what the diameter of the ring is for future reference.
