I have a one piece plexiglass insert for the companionway that I use when I’m staying on board (it usually rains a few times a day for a few minutes here on Oahu). However, I can’t think of a good place to stash the drop boards. Any good solutions out there?

See https://www.pearson424.org/gallery/rcarterinterior/P8180010 . The photo isn’t very good. I added a rack to hold the hatchboards. I also hinged the hatchboards together to limit the number of incorrect ways to insert them to 3.

Speaking of drop boards. By what method does everyone use to hold them in place when used underway, let’s say in ” heavy” weather conditions. I believe some of the race orgs. mention that they must be secured in case of a broach or worse.

      Dan,
I also have a single piece, plastic hatch board.  I store it at the head of the bunk in the aft cabin, secured by a piece of elastic cord.  I stow the vanes for the Monitor in the same place, between the head of the mattress and the bulkhead.

I made a similar rack, but put it in that useless space between aft
between the engine cover and the berth, mounted to the engine cover.
One additional nice thing about mounting it here is that you can reach
the boards in the rack while standing on the companionway.

I did the same thing Pete did.

I like the idea of Plexiglas wash boards, but would opt for at least 2 (if not 3) pieces. I often put in just 1 or 2 of the 3 wood boards when it’s raining (or cold), enough to keep out the splatter (or some of the cold air), but not entirely shutting me off from the the cockpit and fresh air.

I also have a one piece frame that is fitted with a piece of lexan. Keep it behind the door in the aft cabin.
I just got done building one just like it that has just a screen in it.

On Easy Reach our one piece plastic drop board is stored between the binnacle and the binnacle support stand. I tie a line between the opening for the lock latch and the two arms of the support to hold the board in place when heeling. I dohn”t have photos now, but will be able to supply one in a couple of weeks after I come back from spring skiing.

We use the plastic board almost all the time to close the companionway and use the two lower of the split boards to ventilate during a rain. We use a one piece board with a screen when the weather is clement.
