Hello everyone,
My opinion is that if you already have a radar mast at the stern, keep it
there as long as it is on the port side where it is less likely to cast a
shadow on your future solar panels when you are at anchor, especially the
farther you go down island in the Caribbean. You will be facing the east
wind most of the time when at anchor.?
The farther up the mast that the ray dome is, the more movement. Most times
that you use your radar will be in low viability conditions and most likely
calmer waters. A ray dome 12 feet above the water should suffice for normal
cruising conditions.
With AIS , chartplotters and every other option available to us now, radar
is mainly for foggy conditions and double checking your position with
regards to the chart plotter and keeping an eye on vessels of interest.Jack Clarke

out. I usually jump from 1 mile to maybe 5-6 miles and sometimes 1/2 mile
in close quarters.
So 20′ up the main mast would be a good spot just from the aspect of the
radar performance but with a cutter rig that would have the staysail
passing across the dome on every tack or gybe. But as I think about it,
even on a sloop rig or mounting the dome over the staysail stay I will have
the jib doing the same thing so maybe it’s a moot point?

Jack,
Does the greater motion higher up a mast actually affect a
radar’s performance? It sounds logical, yet I’ve never noticed or
heard of it, and mast mounts are so common. Any data on that,
anyone?Tor

The question about leveling or gimbaled mounts is interesting.  YBW did a test on the effect on radar performance at various angles of heel.  Link here.

Wow, thanks for that, Skip. I didn’t realize how much radar is affected by heel. Live & learn.
Perhaps that gimbaled backstay mount is the better way to go.
