      John,
I grab whatever the hardware store has on the shelf for fluorescent paint. Its spray paint, so it goes on pretty easy. I spray about 3 links for each stripe. The bright color is easier to see than plain paint. It fades over the coarse of the summer but is perfectly readable for a season. The next year I pull the chain out and power wash it. Then I lay it out on the driveway on a large tarp and spray it again. Every few years I end-end the chain. The old marks fade enough so the chain is readable. I need new chain soon. Its 23 years old now and getting thin in a few spots (3/8HT). Its a boat unit to replace.
