Hi Howard,
Those davits came with the boat. I don’t now who made them. Almost certainly they are one-offs, not a production set, and frankly I’m not wild about them. Davits that offer the option of folding in when not in use, to shorten the boat’s LOA, seem smarter. Also I think mine are kind of ugly, the way they slope. Finally, as you mentioned I did have to reinforce them with a support strut. One of them was kinked from the PO’s letting his dinghy fill with rainwater while hanging. I jacked the bent pipe straight and made it stronger, but that wasn’t the end of the modifications. Recently, when I installed my new Auto-Helm windvane, I set things up so it could operate while the dinghy was in the davits. (That’s a unique feature of this particular windvane.) Turned out it required the davits to be extended both farther from the transom and higher off the water. This I accomplished by having a welder add on a couple of feet of pipe, which you can see in the attached photos. Not pretty, but it worked.
If I were starting from scratch, I believe I could design something better than what I’ve got. As it is, however, they’re functional enough and I’ve got other priorities around the boat.
Good luck with yours. I think they’re a very handy thing to have for certain kinds of sailing.
Tor
