Thanks for all of the replies, Anybody have a charger they like?
There’s a xantrex 40 amp I can get pretty cheaply that I like, but…Xantrex just made the top of my S list.
1) the thing is complicated, and when it kicked out “error #3073” Xantrex themselves could not tell me what it meant.
2) I gave them the serial number and they said it was reparable, albeit with a $99 “diagnostic fee” OK, so I spent $86 to ship it to them, only to have them tell me
It’s broke, and they have no boards that will fit it. Hmm, NO BOARDS. SO I ponder that for a moment and realize that I spent $200 and there was NO POSSIBILITY of fixing it regardless of the result of the “diagnosis.” It sure seems to me they should have known they had no parts to fix it when I gave them the serial number, no?On 9/23/09 5:52 PM, Robert Fine wrote :
Yes. It provides 20 amps at 120vac, that translates to a lot of amps DC. I’ve regularly put 60+amps out through the charger.

Well, my POS xantrax finally died, and I’m looking to replace it with a separate charger and inverter.
Can the Honda EU200i handle powering a 40 amp charger?

We’ve had a Xantrex 40 charger on Esy Reach for the past 4 years. Never had a problem with it and it does a good job of topping up and equalizing (desulfating) our wet cell batteries on the rare occasion we are in a marina. Our 150 amp generator keeps the batteris up inbetween shoreside charges. We also have a Xantrex 1750 inverter.
The installation was complicated. I turned the whole job over to a technician in Bedeck (Cape Breton), Nova Scotia. He made some sort of error and blew the inverter, or was it the charger, ate the cost and ordered a new one. He also installed the new generator and rewired the old one to dedicate it to the stgarting battery. My suggestion would be to bite the bullet and hire a pro to do the installaion.
We had an old Heart combo unit, which finallhy quit and would not charge the batteries. Xantrex, which bought Heart offered some sort of exchange if I sent the old unit in to them. They are in California and we were in Nova Scotia.

ParticipantI used a Victron multi plus. It was a little more cost wise but it made use of the Honda generator easy. This is copied from the manual also it has a remote that lets me set the max amps that the charger will use.
PowerControl – Dealing with limited generator or shore side power (Multi/MultiPlus
only)
The Multi is a very powerful battery charger. It will therefore draw a lot of current from the
generator or shore side supply (nearly 10 A per Multi at 230 VAC). With the Phoenix Multi
Control Panel (PMC) a maximum generator or shore current can be set. The Multi will then
take account of other AC loads and use whatever is extra for charging, thus preventing the
generator or shore supply from being overloaded.
PowerAssist – Boosting the capacity of shore or generator power
The feature that distinguishes the Phoenix MultiPlus from the standard Multi is PowerAssist.
This feature takes the principle of PowerControl to a further dimension allowing the MultiPlus
to supplement the capacity of the alternative source. Where peak power is so often required
only for a limited period, it is possible to reduce the size of generator needed or conversely
enable more to be achieved from the typically limited shore connection. When the load
reduces, the spare power is used to recharge the battery.
Note: minimum shore current 4 A or generator capacity 2,5 kW required per
MultiPlus.I have used it for the air conditioner that draws 20 or so amps at start up and it switches from charging to inverter to make up for the small generator and jumps back to charger when the load from the AC drops once the compressor is running.
