I have an electric windlass with a manual backup. There’s a handle that you can use to pull the chain up by hand if the motor fails. I’ve tried the handle just to see how well it works and was disappointed. Although it is pretty easy to hand crank, each crank on the handle only pulls in about 3 inches of chain. It would take forever to retrieve my groundtackle that way. let’s see, assuming that I have only about 100 feet of chain down there, it would take 400 cranks of the handle to pull up my chain. That would take about 10 minutes of exhausting work. If it’s not too late, consider returning the hand crank and putting the money toward an electric unit. The electric units come with a hand crank, so you can always use the handle if all else fails or you want to get some exercise. Put the old unit on ebay.
