For Easy Reach, the rigger, Pope Sails and Rigging of Rockland, Maine, recommended a T-bolt to connect our Solent stay to the mast. I cut a slot with ovate ends in the mast about 18 inches below the head, slipped a steel fitting behind it and bolted it to the mast (it can be riveted as well, best perhaps with monel metal rivets). The T-bolt is then twisted 90 degrees and inserted into the slot. Doug Pope claims he has used T-bolts sucessfully on a number of different rigs for different types of stays.

      Norris,

Thanks for your feedback. I’m afraid I can’t picture what you’re describing, though. Any chance of sending a few photos?

No photos before late April. Easy Reach is in a creek off Raritan Bay and we are in Evanston, IL. We will be going out in mid April for a wedding–our grand nephew–and I will do some work on the boat then and can climb the mast–I have steps–and take a picture. T-bolts are a standard rigging attachement device and can be found in rigging company catalogues.

      Norris,

Thank you for the offer of April photos, but there’s no need. I expect to have my installation done before then. I am familiar with T-bolts, but you wrote, “I cut a slot with ovate ends in the mast about 18 inches below the head, slipped a steel fitting behind it and bolted it to the mast.” I’m unclear about why you cut a hole in the mast rather than bolting a fitting to the spar’s outside surface. Also, how did you manage to slip in and bolt a fitting behind the hole you cut? By removing the masthead cap plate?

I cut the hole in the mast to the size of the opening in the fitting. By twisting the fitting, I could worry it through the slot and then hold it against the inwide of the mast. Getting everything lined up was tricky and I tied a length of marline around the fitting in case in dropped which it did. I marked holes for drilling thru the mast with the fitting laid over the outside of the mast after cutting the slot. I held the nuts and washers in place for the screws with an offset box wrench and masking tape.

That is a remarkable achievement, Norris, and no doubt very strong.
