Before I owned my 424, the boat broke free from her mooring during an early fall northeaster in Marblehead harbor Massachusetts. She ended up on the rocks and had her keel and rudder skeg ripped off. She was only four years old at the time. This was in 1982. Her BUC value at the time was about $130k. A local yard bought her as salvage and reglassed the keel and rudder. There was no damage above the waterline. They pulled the hull off the beach and cut the keel up into pieces and glassed the whole thing back together in their yard over the course of a year. She sat in the boat yard for three years with no offers. I finally came up with enough cash to make an offer acceptable to the yard. I had a reputable surveyor do a thorough inspection before I bought her. I still sometimes find seaweed inside a locker somewhere, but the boat has proven to be well found.
Repairs like this are possible but expensive. I don’t know what the yard paid for her including labor and materials for the repairs. I’d guess $40k. In today’s money, that would be about $100k. Few if any 424’s would justify that kind of repair bill today.
