Usually, once a year. This year more often since we went south and put a lot more water through the system. I replaced the end bolts with stainless steel which seems to be pretty compatable with the bronze heat exchanger.

I’m very interested in hearing any alternatives ways to clean the V-drive. My new V-drive is about 3 years old now. Its due for a cleaning. I’m not looking forward to the task. Can you provide any more information on your cleaning method below?

      gotta getta get.

The brushes seem nice. Which giant AllClad pot did your wife let you use to boil the muriatic acid through the heat exchanger? I have mine on the workbench downstairs and I am cleaning and repainting it prior to reinstallation. Hoping to run COOL this summer.

I used a delimer called red line as recommended by the yard manager. It did nothing that I could tell. When I removed the cover it was solid. Out came the screwdriver and shop vac.
I chipped away at the black crud for about two hours. After it was cleaned out the delimer finished the job and made everything shiny.

When I cleaned my old V-drive, I think I spent well over 8-hrs chipping away at the crud. I tried all kinds of cleaners from naval-jelly to acid; even teak cleaner. I tried a small bit on a die-grinder and finally settled on chisel and hammer. After cleaning it well, I coated the cooling jacket with marine-tex. I eventually replaced the darn thing. The new v-drive has an oil cooler running through the cooling jacket, so its going to be much harder to clean. I guess I’ll find out later this spring. No way am I going up onto my boat when its below zero….

      Regards
      Rich
