SpectatorYesterday evening we pulled the mizzen mast but were unable to get the main out out of the step. It is very corroded. Anyway as night came upon us we called it a day. Today we’ll be working on that and then putting the boat in the yard to do some bottom work and other projects.
I had to use a vacation day for this, but a bad day on the boat beats the best day at the office as they say. 😉

If your stick has not been removed for several years, it may be impossible to get it out in one piece. We had a thread about this a year ago or so. I helped a guy at my club yard remove his main mast. We used a large crane. We successfully lifted the boat about two feet out of the water with no sign of the mast coming free. The owner ended up cutting the base of the mast off using a sawzall. The mast step is iron and it sits in the bilge. It will rust. In the process it swells and clamps around the mast base. The base is made of aluminum. It corrodes and forms a bond with the iron.
After cutting the mast as low as you can, you can remove the mast step and glass in a step. The new step will be a few inches higher than the old step. Make the hight difference the same measurement as what you cut off.

SpectatorYeah right now we’re unbolting the mast step from the boat using and impact wrench and then they’re going to raise it and cut it off or knock it off. I already planned for a new step in mind so it’s not a big deal, just the labor… luckily labor is 20% off at the yard right now.

THIS SIMPLE ADVICE FROM RICH, many moons ago to me, saved me a bundle. Measure what you take off, and build up the step. Our rigging required almost NO adjustment.
