On the last sail of the season before delivering Silverheels to her indoor storage at Crowley’s Yacht Yard in Chicago, one of the crew members had the pump handle of the toilet break off from the pump assembly in his hand. After delivering and winterizing, I started the effort to address the problem. I could not find any markings indicating the type of toilet so I had to rely on pictures and google searches and make an educated guess that the toilet was a Raritan. Further research indicated to me that Raritan kept replacement assemblies fairly consistent and universal and that the PHII pump assembly seemed to be the appropriate replacement for multiple toilet types over many years. The pump assembly came in the mail last week and it took me about three hours to completely remove the old assembly, clean exposed surfaces with the old pump removed, and install the new pump (Yes…I’m slow and methodical when working with anything mechanical). Adding a small amount of water into the toilet bowl and pumping confirmed that the pump was getting could suction.

Two additional pieces of information I wanted to share. The supplier I used for the pump assembly was defender.com…I find they tend to have most of what I need at a reasonable price.

The pump assembly did not include a metal pipe handle…I had to pull the old one out of the old assembly using a vice and some channel locks to separate the plastic housing from the handle after disengaging the pin. Aligning the new handle into the assembly so that the pin would engage was easier than I thought it would be.
