I am back in the water with the new Kubota 2403 engine, new Walter 26 v drive and new 71c BG trans and shaft. Still have some minor wiring and plumbing to do. Everything went pretty smoothly. We did hit a few speed bumps. The engine stringers had to be chiseled out in back to get the engine lower. Also have to do a modification on the drain plug for the oil pan which is almost touching the hull. I am having a high rise exhaust made as I didn’t like the one Phasor offered. We put the new muffler in the center, but it still wasn’t 12″ below the center of the exhaust outlet, which is on the back side of the engine. The new Kubota 53hp is alot smaller than the W60 and 200 lbs lighter. The Kubota with marinized parts was $10,000.00 The trans was $1,500.00 the Walter 26 was $2,600.00. The new SS shaft was $600.00 The yard bill including crane and 15 lay days was $1,600.00 I did the bottom painting, engine room painting, general goofer duties and decision making while overseeing the mechanic who did the actual work. His bill when finished will be around $8,000.00. He gets $60.00 hr and is worth every cent. He also did alot of cleaning up of old wiring as well as the new wiring. The new panel will go in the same place as the W60, just below the step into the cockpit. We are putting the key and stop in there also, so no more having the rais the cockpit locker to turn the engine on and off. Anybody want more info just write me directly. I’ll report how the engine performs in a few weeks. Regards, Cindy Stein “Island Bound” Ft. Lauderdale

Good to hear that your repower is coming along well. Once you’ve had a chance to sea-trial your installation, please send out a “lessons learned” message for our knowledge base.

FWIW, at one time I relocated my key and kill switchs to the instrument panel. The only problem was that you can’t reach the key in an emergency from the helm. There are rare occasions when this has proved important. I suggest that you reconsider your key placement.

      Regards

      Cindy,
Also see my comments in another thread about the problems of having a key standing proud of the bridge deck.  If your panel will be recessed with a cover, then you should have not have my problems, but I agree with Rich – best to have the start switch near the helm.
