I received the following initial quote from Doyle, my local sailmaker. I’ll be modifying the request to change to a 155% genoa, to add a Dutchman system and Tides Track mainsail track system. Other small things such as sail number and draft stripes will also impact price. The quote was made for a heavy weight headsail. The 424 is stiff so I’m likely to fly it in heavy air.

I plan to place my order this September. The price below doesn’t include the 15% offseason discount which I expect to take advantage of. I’m expecting a final price of about $7500 for main and headsail.

I prefer a domestic manufacturer. Since I race the boat, I’m not willing to go for a cheap import. If anyone else has a quote from a domestic manufacturer I’d be interested in comparing price.

I don’t know what I’ll do with the used sails. Both are in decent shape. Worn and somewhat baggy but perfectly usable. If I don’t keep them as spares, I may sell them. They would fit the tall ketch.

Make sure you measurements are the same as Doyle’s internal measurements. My Doyle made sails (which were supposed to be to customs specs) were Off, and had to be recut. Not that big a deal, but annoying when I was 1 month from leaving.

Yes, thanks. I plan on having a sales rep come down and measure the boat. I’ll let folks know what the final cost comes to once I have a firm quote. I’m looking forward to a new mainsail track and dutchman. Raising and lowering the main is a PIA right now.

      Rich-
You might want to get that domestic made stuff in writing. Doyle does have a production loft in China.

They closed their China loft. No idea why; maybe quality issues. I think
they still have a loft in the Carrebean somewhere, maybe Jamaca.

Rich..it’s in Barbados. They have a sail loft in Trinidad ( Soka Sails ), but the sails are cut and sown in Barbados.

practical sailor guide to sailing gear

Interesting read. Scroll down to about page 50 for sailmaker info. This link has about half the book posted online. If you want the rest of the book you must buy it.

Better latent than never. I got to my computer. Here is the quote
comparison the I think Pat did. It is a little dated but not too much.

Thank you, Linus, and all of you who shared sail costs. They’re actually
      less expensive than I expected.

      Much appreciated,

      Tor

Has anyone used Rolly Tasker in Thailand? Or Far East Sails?

Rolly Tasker: Looks like a 150 Genoa using US made cloth is $2540.

Far East: Came in at $2200 for a 135.

My local Doyle loft is trying to sell me a 135 for $3681 (Square weave Dimension Polyant). The Doyle Barbados loft can make one for $2800 (Contender sailcloth)

Reviews online don’t look to be any worse than reviews for the local lofts.

I have been very happy with Haarstick Sails.
Based in Rochester NY. All sails made in house.
I have 6 different sails on 3 different boats from them.
They have all the measurements for the 424.

We bought a 90% (more or less) jib from Rolly Tasker through National Sail Supply for our self tacking setup. Sail was inexpensive, very well made and finished, and had all the extras like foam luff, sunbrella cover, leather, etc. No size or fit problems as it is made to your measurements.
Shipping from FL about $50, no duties or sales tax. Delivery was about three weeks. Several lofts now import RT sails including Bacon’s in Annapolis. National Sail Supply is the first.

Tasker sounds good, but I think I will go with Alan’s (Unabated’s) recommendation. I just spoke to Doug and l liked what I heard and the price extended.
