What is the latest scuttlebutt about sailing to Cuba in 2015. The news tonight gave me hope. Is it now legal for US citizens? Insurance concerns? Who has up-to date charts? It is just a short hop from Key West or the Dry Tortugas. I was so tempted in 2013. Tor, have you been?

Also watched this on my local (Florida where anything Cuba is news) and national news. Of course I’m a bit cynical about the accuracy of TV news after seeing some blatant mistruths and intentionally misleading bits but all I’ve read so far confirms that travel for strictly fun is not (yet) legal. You have to go for religious, humanitarian, cultural, scientific, etc reasons.

I have had online discussions with a couple of sailors who were en route from Mexico back to Florida who had “engine trouble” and needed to check in to the nearest port for safety. Both radioed the USCG with their intentions and were verbally OK’d to check in to Havana for repairs.
