ParticipantHi All,
The saloon floor around the mast felt kind of soft. On examination I noticed that there was a gap between the bottom of the bunk and the saloon floor.
More access to the bilges has always been on my list, so I removed part of the cabin sole in this area.
There are two supports that run across the boat, but they do not have any support from the hull.
The question is – can one use the structural in-built glass fibre stringers as a base to add vertical supports for the cross beams.
Appreciate any comments
Regards
Dennis

ModeratorYes, you can, but you should tab the ends to the stringer.

I’m not being terse. This is from my mobile.

ParticipantDennis,
Since I glassed in a fuel tank under the salon floor I have some
intimacy with this matter… On my 424, there are indeed vertical
supports of the cross beams. These are roughly even with the inner edge
of the water tanks. They are just 2 x 3s or 2 x 4s mounted vertically
and cross bolted into the beams. They are glassed in to the hull and I
believe there is a plywood pad under them to spread the force around a bit.Pete

ParticipantTo tab to the hull or stringers you’ll need to expose clean laminate or it will separate. Another concern about reinforcing things is creating hard spots on th hull. Mr. Shaw expected some flexing of the hull.

john stevensonParticipantDennis,
Here is a link to the modifications I made to the cabin sole for access:

Bob has pictures and descriptions of the modifications he did on his
website. I stole the idea from him, but didn’t do nearly as elegant of
job.Regards,

ParticipantThanks Guys,
Guess I must have a few supports missing. Besides the two around the heads area, the next two are just forward of the bilge, and no more. All these four have a large pad on the hull to spread the load. There does appear to be any support for the water tank.
Had to do something to support the cross beams that run across the cabin sole so I added vertical supports just forward and aft of the mast using the keel step as a support. This made quite a difference, and then added a support beneath the cross beams and the half round fibreglass stringer that runs forward to aft as part of the hull.
Not sure of the reason for not having the cabin sole bonded more directly to the hull, and there is probably some design aspect to it.
Thanks
AgainDennis
That is the starboard side done, and now for the port side.
