I picked up a C. Plath Horizon Ultra sextant at a flea-market last weekend. I already have a nice Astra IIIb but the C. Plath is beautifully crafted and came with all kinds of goodies such as a Celesticomp electronic sight reduction computer. I need another sextant like I need another hole in my head but I couldn’t resist.

I now have an Astra IIIb sextant that I need to part with. It comes with extras. If anyone is interested, please contact me before I put it on ebay.

Nice find, Rich! Alas, I’ve already got 3 sextants on board plus one on
shore and don’t use any of them anymore.

      Rich,
I’d be interesting in it as a Christmas gift for my wife. She’s rather obsessed with celestial navigation. 🙂
Good find on your C. Plath, btw!

The guy who sold me the C. Plath just sold his boat and is getting rid of all his nautical accessories. He taught celestial navigation for the power squadron so he made a considerable investment in his stuff. I got quite a pile of navigation equipment including books and charts. There’s even an electronic sight that has a built in compass and timer.

It’s quite sad really. He loved boating but got to that point in his life where he had to give it up. We’ll all have to face this one day. As I get older I can see it coming. The 424 is a lot of boat to single-hand. Much of my cruising is done solo since my wife won’t take the time off from work. I can see a power boat in my future 🙁

Oh, no Rich! Not the dark side! Say it isn’t so! 🙂

There is no small appeal to starting the engine, getting in gear, and
      going.

I purchased Pelican just so I could handle it well into older age –
smallish, easily controlled sails and a boat that mostly behaves in a
stately manner. Except in astern. But I plan to never to get into
situations where I need it. Ha!

The Astra IIIb is in very good condition. There’s a minor blemish on the wooden case but it appears otherwise as new. I’ll send photos. It comes with a both the whole-horizon mirror and the split mirror. Included is a practice bubble sight, artificial horizon, sight-reduction worksheets, and sextant book (I forgot the title but it’s a manual on how to use and care for one).

      $350 plus shipping.
