I have been told that my shaft has a crack where the propellor
attaches to it, plus, it is not perfectly true and straight. That
could explain the vibration I have been experiencing above 2200 RPM.
The boat is in Trinidad, on the hard. The quote I’m given is $700 plus
shipping of $300…OUCH!!
Has anyone experienced having to replace the shaft recently? At what
cost?Am I getting the shaft??

ParticipantI had it done in Rochester NY so there was no shipping involved. The shaft cost about 550.

Thanks Alan,
I’m curious to know what caused you to have to change your shaft?

ParticipantThe shaft bearing was worn, but when I took the bearing out I found that the shaft was worn also. Just replacing the bearing would not have taken care of the slop.
While I had the shaft out, I also replace the packing gland with a PSS shaft seal.

I See….yes, as my mechanic says ” that’s the boating life” !!
BOAT is an acronym for Break Out Another Thousand.
Except this year, my BOAT became a BOATT…as I needed a new engine also. ( ten thousand)Joe,

ParticipantJoe,
Out here in the boondocks we have a pretty good and very reasonable machine shop just down the road. I know
they have made stainless shafts for a number of boats here in the marina, and I believe the guy mentioned to
me that he was charging around $200 for them. Might be worth a phone call:Chuck Coats
shop: 904-529-1758
cell: 904-572-2183Feel free to mention my name. I’ve used him for a bunch of jobs in recent months. Presently having a pair of
stainless handles fabricated, and am discussing with him the possibility of converting my mountain bike to a
folding bike. He’s honest and reliable and would probably ship a shaft for you.Tor

I had a Perkins 4-154, a 1994. Broke a valve stem. Valve fell into the combustion chamber. game over – tilt.
Now I have a Yanmar 54HP naturally aspirated, a very nice engine.
