john stevensonParticipantAlso 5/16″ for the Solent Stay. I originally planned on 3/8″ (website still says that), but my rigger talked me out of it.

ParticipantThe reason I asked is because I am going to purchase the wire this week and I wanted to make sure. I was looking at the Sta-Lock fittings and one for the 5/16 wire comes with a 1/2 inch pin. Now, following Jack Tylers plan for the mast head fitting, I had a 5/8 hole put in. I am now questioning the wisdom of that…… mmmmm something else to ask RiggingOnly about.
thanks

ModeratorI think my inner forestay is 5/16, but am not near the boat to measure. But the thickness of a baby stay and a solent stay should be different as their lengths are quite different. On the other hand, neither stay is holding the mast up and isn't subject to the same stresses. So, either would be fine.

Our Solent stay is 9/32, decided on by the rigger after he consulted with a naval architect. So far it seems to work with our high-cut Yankee the luff of which runs the full length of the stay, i.e., nearly to the mast head from the bow pulpit.
The rig gave us good formard drive and lift close hauled into a force 4 to 5 wind.
