Thx guys. Sounding more and more like dirty injectors. mebbe running
1750-1800 rpm wasn’t such a brilliant idea after all. The OEM W60
injectors are really expensive unless I can x-reference non westerbeke
parts. I wonder how easy do they clean up? Or am I better off
bringing them to someone’s shop in a sack?
Also thank you re pump info. I sail in cold too; the non-engine
circuit for the pump can be the one that juices the heater fan.

I took my injectors to a diesel truck shop down the road. He charged me 150 bucks to rebuild all 4.

I’ve screwed up injectors twice in a previous boat running high rpms-once for survival.Dirty injectors  dump really ugly black pitch out the exhaust that floats away slowly.Professional cleaning and polishing does the trick- I remember they will test them first and recommend replacing individually as needed.A lot of diesels on the road-it’s a common problem.

I’ve seen new injectors on Ebay. Apparently the W-58 injectors also fit some other Westerbekes, including the W-100.

      Hi John-
Thanks. Cut and paste failure. I was looking at #10.

      Quent,
I was really impressed that Foley Marine actually wants to help their customers.  I guess the A-hole who usually answered their phone must have died.  I'm sure that answered the fervent prayers of many Perkins owners.

      Hi John-
I’ve heard the Foley stories, too. Never had any dealings with them, so I really don’t have an opinion. Their website is pretty useful.
Most of the engine guys I deal with in Annapolis and on the Web are helpful and professional, but are bad mouthed by someone unhappy with them. I guess some of it goes with the territory.
Maybe my expectations are too low. In prior life, had to deal with lawyers and politicians.

      Quent,
I'm sure there is a lot of what you say in the Foley reputation.  I have not dealt with directly with them myself, but I have heard a fairly consistent set of experiences from others who own Perkins engines.  Getting hung up on when questioning the information provided on part order seemed to be on of the common experiences.  Such as asking, “That part number is not the same as in my parts manual, has it been superceded?” with a reponse, “You want the part or not?” – CLICK!
      Some reputations are earned.

The problem is the owner himself. He did not honor a discount offer provided to me on his website when I placed an order for an air filter. IMHO, a man is only as good as his word. If you publish a discount offer, you must honor it. Not everyone agrees with this. I complained about the what I considered a deceptive practice and asked that he return a W60 water pump I had sent in for service. He refused to return the pump and we went to court over it. Under Massachusetts laws, he should have been liable for three times the purchase price, but I didn’t file the case properly. I got enough out of him to order a new pump however. You can chose to do business with him, but beware. I don’t consider this kind of behavior honorable and don’t chose to business with him or anyone else who fails to meet their obligations.

I also had a problem with TAD. After asking too many questions, he asked me to take my business elsewhere. Most of my questions are answered for you folks on the web site I made about repowering. You can chose to do business with TAD, but don’t expect him to answer to answer questions after the sale.

So what about Yanmar, the company I eventually purchased my engine from? They didn’t really honor their commitment either, but it wasn’t quite so blatant. They answered all my questions, but the answers were frequently wrong.

And this is why Claire is always telling me not to recommend anyone.
