Rich,
Apparently your friend didn’t know he needed chafe gear on his mooring
lines. It’s a must in those kinds of conditions. The best stuff I know
of is free. Ask your local fire department for some fire hose they’re
retiring from service. There is usually some around most stations, I’ve
found, and they’re glad to give it to you. Cut that into 2′ lengths and
split the pieces lengthwise so you can slip them over a line or rode
without having to start from the bitter end. Finally, lash the hose
section to the line with small stuff. Five hurricanes later that hose
will still be there and the line it’s protecting will suffer no chafe
whatsoever.
