ParticipantDuring the winter I rewired the main mast. I ran all new wires from the mast step under the bilge and up to the aft hanging locker.
I finally got around to pulling out all the old wires the other day. The old wires run through the looms on the Stb side of the boat and through all the lockers to the fwd hanging locker. I was doing good up until then. The wires were just pulling out. Once I got to the hanging locker I could not budge them. Investigating, I removed the cover from the seat next to the hanging locker. In there was some of that perforated board. Underneath the board was – a TERMINAL STRIP. All rusty and yucky. The wires come up out of the bilge to this terminal strip.
I did not know that terminal strip existed. It was labeled and everything – Mast light – anchor light etc…..
Anybody else know about this. Anybody not know about this and are surprised.

ModeratorI've been dealing with that strip since I got the boat – mine's in good condition and is working fine. Sorry.

that’s exactly how my boat is wired. The harness from the mast runs into that space from underneath. The terminal strips are a bear to disconnect when I unstep the mast each season and worse to reconnect. I wired in some connectors so I can unplug them. I tape up the connectors pretty well. Its damp in there.Regards
Rich

ParticipantThose of us who winter store our boats with the spars out are very familiar with the terminals you describe.

ParticipantI winter my boat every year. I guess the PO got tired of re doing the terminal strip and just put quick connectors on the mast wires. That is what was there when I bought her and never looked any further.
Never knew it was there. In the trash heap now, along with all the rest of the wiring.

SpectatorI am very shocked you found something labeled on the boat. 😉
I didn’t know about that, I’ll go looking for it soon though as I’m starting to put my plan together the masts and working on the standing rigging and deck hardware this fallwinter.I’m curious about your new wiring run through the bilge, did you use any conduit or cable tray?

ParticipantI ran 3 separate 2 or 3 conductor cables through the bilge. Since they are already coveredI didn’t feel the need to run them through a tray or through conduit. I use wire ties to hold the cable up to the bottom of the sole. Nice and neat and out of the way.

ParticipantConnectors, as you mention, are certainly a good idea. Wish I had thought of that after all these years of disconnecting and re-connecting each of the light and wind instrument wires. My termoinal strips, however, are not corroded.
