I had a contractor come out and soda-blast the boat bottom yesterday. It
took him and two helpers about 5 hours to tent the boat and strip the
bottom. They did a great job. There’s a tinge of pink in the gelcoat, but
no evidence of residual bottom pain. Previous blister repairs are visible
as are a spattering of new blisters, most localized to specific areas such
as the rudder skeg. Much of the bottom is covered with hairline cracks.
These spider-web across the bottom about 6 inches apart or so. I asked the
contractor if this was typical for an older boat and his response was “yes”.
As far as I can tell, none of the cracks are wider than a hair. My plan is
to let the boat dry for three or four more months (12 months total) then
apply 4 coats of barrier coat. There are too many cracks to contemplate
filling. There’s enough work repairing whatever blisters have been exposed.
FWIW, it cost $2,000 to strip the paint.
The contractor suggested a light sanding with 80-grit paper and a washdown
with plain water before applying the first barrier coat.
