ParticipantJust curious. Where in GA are you? I live half the year on Lake Lanier, north of Atlanta and spend the other half on our 424 ketch in HI. Do you keep your ketch here on the coast?

I bought a solar panel from Canada and mounted it just in front of the
doghouse, and in front of the traveler. It gets pretty much unobstructed
sunlight. With it I have been able to run my fridge 24 7 with only rare
engine starts to replenish juice. When I leave the boat for the day at
anchor, it’s on the house only, so the engine batt is always 14 plus volts.
I have an ampair wind generator but this panel has been the single best
improvement I have made to go green and run the fridge without the engine.
Also I have changed ALL MY LIGHTS to LED’s. Including NAV lights, overheads,
courtesy, etc.The sunsei folks in Montreal are great. And if you are a live aboard you
probably get a green home improvement tax credit.http://www.sunsei.com/Solar-Lifestyle/Boating-Solar-Chargers

ParticipantHi Thatcher,
What size of panel did you go with and how did you mount it?

SpectatorMy panels were put on by the PO. Port and Starboard they are mounted on a
single rail which is ~30″ tall (guess). The rail is thru bolted the cockpit
combing on the foreward leg like a leg of the stern pulpit and pipe clamped
to the stern pulpit on it’s aft leg (I hate that part). The panels
themselves are attached to the rail with pipe clamps. They can be flip up
and down and that is controlled with some line (I also hate that part). You can make most of that out in this picture.

ParticipantObviously you are yet to learn what reef knots are for. Apologies this question was meant for adults.

ParticipantJ&S-
We have had success using 1″ stainless tubing and rail fittings. Sometimes you can find the stuff cheap at used boat supply stores or on the Internet. We have a sloop rig and have four 80 watt panels above the bimini and between the backstay and the aft end of the boom. Don’t know if that spot would work for a ketch. Maybe if the mizzen boom was high enough, and didn’t shadow the panels too much.
Make sure the structure is rigid and strong enough to hold up to whatever wind you expect.
Regarding davits, used ones show up occasionally on Craigslist and Ebay, but watch out for stress cracks in stainless steel.

ParticipantSorry. I did not realize that there was no room in your busy boat
life for a little humor. This forum has been a pretty good balance
between the facts and the fun.SO LIGHTEN UP!
