Has anyone determined the best brand name(s) and source(s) for solar panels? Are some brands more
efficient than others or better bang-for-the-buck values? Are some better made than others for use on
boats?Thanks,
Tor

john stevensonParticipantTor,
If you haven't done so already, I would post the same question on the SSCA and Cruisers Forums. You'll get a much wider cross-section of experience than from the limited membership of this forum. Of course you will also have to sort out for yourself who knows what of the responses you'll get on those forum. Actually you could just search the forums on the solar panel subject and get a great deal of user experience.John

I agree with John’s comments to look at those boards. I think you will find
the Kyocera 130watt (now 135’s) are pretty popular. However, size has more
to do with the real estate you have to park them on. Where are you thinking
of putting yours, on top of davits or the bimini??Paul

Paul, I perused the discussion boards at SSCA and picked up a few useful tips, but the research continues. Size limitations are a bit problematic. I want to mount four panels over portions of the bimini top, port & starboard, plus two more on the dodger hardtop I built. I figure the maximum dimensions I can fit in these spaces are:
(2) 26 x 26 – dodger top
(2) 18 x 30 – 1st bimini station
(2) 24 x 48 – 2nd bimini stationAn inch or two smaller in any of these measurements would be fine. Obviously these are all small panels, but I hope I can get maybe 200 watts out of the combined total. That – along with the wind generator, alternator and (maybe) Honda 2000 – ought to keep me in ice cubes living at anchor in the tropics.

Uh, wouldn’t 2 kyocera 135’s on each side of the bimini be 270 watts all by themselves?
And, I don’t know what your bimini looks like, but I plan on at least 2, possibly 3 large panels for and aft on the bimini. I currently have a 110 watt shell across the davits and HATE it, it’s totally in the way trying to do anything with the dinghy. I plan on making a frame to elevate it up out of the way a bit.

Aaron,
Depending on the dimensions of the Kyocera 135, I might be able to use a pair either side of the bimini fore & aft. I’ve designed my bimini with zip-opening panels to allow instant access to the mizzen boom & sail, for furling, etc. This precludes any fixed structure, like solar panels, within 27″ of the bimini’s fore & aft centerline. Hence the panel size limitation.
What are the Kyocera 135 dimensions?

Doh! I forgot not everybody has a sloop 🙂
The kyocera’s are 59.1″L x 26.3″W x 1.4″D

ModeratorHi Tor,
My 100 watt panel which I want to replace is on my dodger and has ceased to function well. Anyway, it's 48 x 24 or so.

ModeratorHi Tor,
It's unknown. I'd have to remove it to find out. There are no markings.
