Anybody else notice the price difference between West Marine and Costco.com on what appear to be similar items?
80 watt Sharp polycrystal panels $799 each at West, $949 at Costco.com for two panels, charge controller and an inverter
AirX wind generator $899 at West, $569 at Costco.com.
Am I missing some special “marine” feature?

That’s West Marine. They offer the 80W solar panel for $100 over full retail. You can get it for about $250 under retail at other various outlets. Amazon offers free shipping.

In the case of the air-x, yes there is a difference between the one costco sells and the one WM Sells.

The ‘marine’ version has coated circuit boards and stainless hardware.

WM is still about $100 higher than you can find elsewhere… BUT, most people really don’t pay full pop at WM.

At least join their little club, that gets you like 5% back. Then for a big ticket item wait for a sale. You can usually find some good coupons for like 10 or even 20% off. If you buy a dinghy or something you can get the ‘new boat owner’ discount which is I think 15% off. And you can combine offers and sometimes really make out. You just have to be patient and be smart about it.

You certainly don’t HAVE to shop there, sometimes it’s nice just to go in and grab something.

If you know somebody with port supply you can get A LOT off.

The WEST “new boat owner’s program” allows the new owner of a new or used vessel 10% off anything & everything and 5% off electronics for a period of 30 days following sign up.
If you are a PAID BOAT US or WEST ADVANTAGE MEMBER, You receive a 10% rebate coupon in the mail for every $200 you spend; for a non-pay WEST ADVANTAGE member, it’s 5%.
The real trick is the WEST price matching policy. Find the cheapest price you can from a legit competitor and take the print out or catalogue into any WEST store and WEST will match the price. For the doubting Thomas’s, details of the policy are listed on page 1304 of the current catalogue. Also, watch for the sales and marked down clearance items.
      Hope this helps …

Why not just join Port Supply? Everything is 20-40% cheaper. Or something like that.

They’ve actually cracked down quite a bit on yacht owners being able to do that. It’s worth a shot, but maybe harder than it once was.

And I thought I was the only boat owner who didn't have a PS card. When I go to the local WM in Solomons, MD they first ask for the PS card, then for the WM Advantage card.

How do you suppose West Marine determines who is “in the marine industry” and who isn’t?

If you have a Port Supply card, you're in the industry. If you don't you're not. Hahahaha!
