ParticipantSo who here thinks that the 3 – 1/4-20 screws (with backing plate) on the base of the mast pulpit is strong enough to put a block on to use for the sheets on the Solent Stay/Storm Jib?
I just got a used storm jib and I am trying to figure if the sheet lead, using a car on the end of the genoa track is enough or put in another track to move the lead forward or use the base of the mast pulpit….. or……Anyone interested in doing a Norfolk to Bermuda trip the 1st week in November?

ModeratorHi Alan,
I'd say I'd be a little worried. I know I'm using the mast pulpits for my staysail sheet, but before I leave I'm putting in two padeyes with 4- 5/16″ bolts each.
Nothing is more disconcerting than having hardware fly off the deck in bad conditions…
Maybe I'll see you before you go – I'll be in Norfolk around the middle of October. Where will you be?

ParticipantPadeye is a great solution…. now, where to place it and then lead it to a winch…..

ModeratorI don't know where you have leads and winches but since I moved all my halyards to the mast I have turning blocks and line brakes left over for other lines like spinnaker tack and staysail sheet. I can send a picture if you want.

Bob/Alan,
Not to be picky, Alan, but those are 1/4″ bolts in the mast pulpit bases, not screws, and as you say they fasten through backing plates. Bob’s pad eye may be a tad stronger with 5/16″ bolts, but I’m not sure I see a big difference there – unless you also use a much larger backing plate with the pad eyes to spread the load over a broader area. If that’s the goal, then perhaps you could just replace the backing plates beneath the mast pulpits’ forward feet, port & starboard. I doubt that a Solent or staysail sheet block, even under full load, is going to snap three 1/4″ bolts.
Bob, I recall that your staysail arrangement incorporates a single-sheet through a block & tackle yoke of sorts, the blocks being attached to mast pulpit feet on either side of the mast. Doesn’t this effectively divide the total sheeting load between the 2 mast pulpit feet? Do you really think the existing bolts and backing plate can’t handle that? I ask because I’m about to set up the same thing on Silver Heels.

ModeratorHi Tor,
You're probably right about the stress for a staysail not exceeding the capabilities of the 3- 1/4″ bolts (actually 6). A solent is a larger sail and has a larger load. Is it too much? I don't know, but I could figure it out.
I'm adding padeyes so I can get a better sheeting angle. The pulpits are just fine except off wind – then the sail twists so much that it becomes ineffective. By widening the stance of the sheet I get better off wind performance, I think, and two great padeyes to tie other stuff to.

ParticipantHi Guys,
I just read your thread about the solent stay. I don't have a solent stay, but I have a removable inner stay that came with Xanadu. It's for hankig on a storm jib. The sheets lead back to two blocks on top of the coach roof about 18″ forward of the mast and out board of the grab rails. These blocks allow the sheets to feed directly to the sheet winches.

ParticipantHey Jack,
Do you have pictures of your arrangement?
Were you up in the Islands 2 weeks ago? A friend of mine thought he saw another 424 passing by Camelot.
