      Hi All,

I'm still searching for the 'perfect' place for my PowerSurvivor 35 water maker. I had a thought – the area inboard the nav station under the cabin sole – has anyone pulled that piece of the sole out and seen what's in that space? My cabin sole slopes aft. I know, that doesn't make sense, but there you have it. I need a place with approximately 3 feet long, 1.5 feet high and maybe 9″ deep to install this thing where I can have access occasionally.

I'm open to any and all ideas.

      Thanks!

      Bob

      Hi Bob,

I had good luck installing a Powersurvivor 35 aft of the port water tank. I (carefully) cut an opening and installed a door. You can see a photo of in near the bottom of this page:

      Bob,

I have a factory-original foot locker beneath the mid-ship companionway ladder. It’s close to the measurements you give except for the athwartships length. I plan to put my PowerSurvivor in there. If necessary, you could cut access into the lower aft corner of the adjacent hanging locker to get the additional length you need inside the foot locker. This location has the advantage of being close to the starboard water tank, which is what my watermaker will feed. The watermaker discharge line leads easily enough through the hanging locker and into the head locker above and outboard of the head sink, where it can be fed into the deck scupper/sink drain.

Another possibility, which I have yet to measure or really look at, is the dead space beneath the settee immediately aft of either of the salon water tanks. It may be too tight in there, but if not then you could install an access hatch in the settee’s aft-facing bulkhead, most easily on the starboard side.

FWIW, a prior owner installed a PUR unit also in the same area, but closer to the sole and on the starboard side.

      Hi All!

Thanks! I'm going check out the space aft of the water tanks – Tor, I'm using that locker under the midships companionway for other stuff – and that hanging locker is already full of plumbing for the macerator pump/manual bilge pump and so forth. I'd like to keep some room to hang something since the locker in the aft cabin is chock full of electrical/electronics gear.

The watermaker may very well fit aft of the tanks and I'm going to give that a shot tonight. It's such a PIA to get to that area.

Steve, can you tell me off hand what size hatches you got? I can travel over to WM and pick them up. They look great!

Sure, I just measured the doors, 10-1/2″ square, outer dimensions. I put one on the starboard side, good storage for beverages, etc…

Robert, what about that spot behind the shower? It appeared there's quite a cavity back there.

      Hi Chuck,

Behind the shower is an excellent place for spare bedding, clothes, parts, and other soft goods – the problem with the small water makers is that you need to operate things occasionally and that area isn't conducive to it.

Also, the water maker should be as low in the boat as possible (Katadyn recommends 2' below the waterline or just about cabin sole level.

Why not mount it under the sole?

      Hi Pete,

Under my sole is getting crowded. Also, there's a tremendous amount of space that can be used for storage. Behind the tanks seems to be a great idea. Oh, and I have very poor access below the sole. I plan on remedying this with new openings.

I’ve been thinking about adding some access as well, where/how do you plan on doing it?

      Hi Aaron,

I plan to put an opening forward of the engine but aft of the current opening for better access to the stuffing box and my new shaft driven alternator.

I also want to put an opening inboard of the refrigerator/stove for storage and access to the reefer compressor unit (and probably the watermaker plumbing).

Finally, somehow, along the table I want an opening that allows access to all that yummy space on top of the keel aft of the mast.

How to do it is more problematical – I'll cut the holes carefully with a circular saw and remove the plank. Then reroute any wires/plumbing in the opening, then frame the opening appropriately (and maybe reinforce with member to hull). The removed piece will get shaved by 1/2″ all around and teak frame attached. Eh Voila! New hatch.

Also, I'll be adding positive catches to all the floorboard openings. (See http://marinepartdepot.com/dring.html )

      Hi All,

Well, after studying the space aft of the water tanks I've discovered there is exactly 3/4″ too little space to install the PowerSurvivor 35. I may put a door on the aft side of the space in the bulkhead that forms the aft wall of the settees – but that's for access and stowage of a case of beer or Dinty Moore Beef Stew.

However, alongside and under the salon table is gobs and gobs of space – I will be putting an opening on either side approximately 3″ long and 10″ wide. I'll be describing the project as well as the watermaker installation on http://thesailinglife.blogspot.com in the unlikely event anyone is interested.

If you have “gobs of space” beneath the salon table, where is your holding tank? Or is there a holding tank?

      Hi Tor,

I installed my holding tank (there was none when I bought Pelican) in the deepest part of the bilge just aft of the keel.

Behind that are my bilge pumps.

On top of the keel behind the mast are my tool and parts boxes.

To the port and starboard, just inboard of my water tanks is where there is gobs of space. Perfect for watermaker and and spare parts.

      Hey Bob,

So many differences between our sisterships! Are you able to climb bodily into your boat’s deep bilge area, what I call the sump, or do your holding tank and bilge pumps prevent that?

      Hi Tor,

When I bought Pelican there was no holding tank – just an ElectroSan (which I found out later was hooked up backwards negating it’s usefulness). I measured and ordered a tank to fit behind the mast in that lovely flat, wide area that exists. That would have left the deep bilge for hiding a family of Mexicans, two red Ferraris and a wide screen TV if that’s what I wanted to do.

After climbing down there once to work on the bilge pumps (rewired recently with appropriate switches and breakers – see http://thesailinglife.blogspot.com/2008/10/i-cant-believe-summers-gone-again.html). One thing I realized was that I’m really not likely to use that space effectively – I purchased an old people’s grabby thing just to retrieve pens, screwdrivers, wrenches, cans, and whatever else I drop down there (which grows in number and variablility).

So, putting the original tank in storage (it’s available for anyone who wants it – 12″ x 16″ x 36″ with 1-1/2″ fittings on one end – the 12 x16 side and 1″ vent fittings on a 16″ x 36″ side – $250 new, make an offer) I ordered a tank that would sit in the deep area and on the floor of the bilge. It came out to be about 30 gallons. It’s functional, but there is more plumbing to do for the macerator pump and the manual pump. When I finish it this winter, I’ll write about it. For now, here’s a picture of the top of the tank.

Under the water tanks in the salon is a tremendous volume that’s beautifully dry, including stringers that provide a safe haven for things that are stowed outboard. True, I haven’t filled all my drawers and stuff, but I have a lot of heavy tools that need a home other than under the table. I expect to have a full hydraulic rigging press aboard when I leave.

So there you have it. A plan of sorts.

Different strokes. Personally, I would not have ordered both Ferraris in red.
