ParticipantDoes anyone have an original opening port for the head left over from a recent replacement? The wood butcher managed to torque down the dog so tight that he broke off the tang on the open glass part (a thin fellow, but his right arm looks like Popeye’s).
I would rather replace the port glass section rather than the whole unit for cosmetic purposes.

ParticipantA good welder can fix it for you, $50-100 (no need to ask me how I know). Advise said welder to make it muscular.

SpectatorYesterday at the Seattle Boat Show, I bought all new Stainless Steel ports from New Found Metals. I won’t start the project till Spring, but when I do I’ll be looking to sell the old ones at a reasonable price.
The six 5×12 plastic Beckson portholes (I don’t know if these are original or not) may not all survive the removal process. The four 4×17.5 cast aluminum (?) portholes will probably pop out just fine.I don’t plan on starting till at least April, so if your time-driven don’t rely on me. If you’re not, let me know what you need.

ParticipantWhat size NFM ports did you buy to replace the 4 x 17.5?

Pearson used several different ports during the 424 production cycle. Mine came with aluminum framed ports with rounded ends. I may still have a pair of them somewhere if I didn’t toss them out. Is this the type you are looking for?Rich

john stevensonParticipantDan,
What Rich posted is correct. Almost every 424 has a different port configuration. There are no opening ports in my head, but I do have a hatch over the shower stall.I don't have any spare portlights in my parts bin (how did that happen?), but it might help others if you posted a picture of the port you want to repair.

ParticipantJohn-
Are you talking about thesmall Bomar port? If so, I have someback in Maryland. Also, try Bacon’s. They usually have some opening Bomars both new and used.

SpectatorThe 3×17… I still need to double check some measurements (My order won’t be processed for 45 days) but I think they will fit just fine. The full size of the 3×17 is 20-1/2 x 6-3/4.

Along this line – I have been working on re-glazing and re-sealing mine the winter. Anyone know a good source for the gasketing?

ParticipantI just took a piece to the local chandlery and they matched it up with what I had. It was only a couple of bucks.

ModeratorI went to Bomar, who originally made the portlights. “Oh”, they said, “we just stopped manufacturing that gasket! I may have a few inches around here…”
Then I looked for gaskets. No joy (I wish I had known your chandlery, Linus). I went to McMaster Carr and purchased a 30' piece of rubber, 3/8″ x 3/8″ and hey! Presto! It fits, it will never crush to leaking and it does the job.
Key is make the split at the top of the portlight (know how I know?) and re-adjust the screws on the hinges. Also, make sure the sealing blade is clean and smooth.
You should not need more than a few inch-pounds on the screws to seal the portlight properly.

ParticipantI believe I have 5 or 6 of the gaskets – new…. in the box. I got the gaskets and found it too difficult to get them on…. so I purchased the new NFM ports instead…. I know…… I know but I wanted new ports anyhow and that just pushed me over the edge (GF actually bought them for me…….what can I say).
Lets me see if I can find them and go from there.
