ParticipantWent to put my spreaders back on my mast and seemed to remember a short length of Stainless seizing wire was there before I removed them. Do the spreaders need to be seized with wire, or just taped in place?
Thanks.

I have a hose clam attached just below the spreaders to keep them from sliding down the shroud. There’s a wrap or two of tape under the clamp. Not the greatest solution, but it works.—

Rodd,
I clamped on stainless steel cable clamps just beneath the spreader tips. The clamps were made for the same size wire as my rigging, main and mizzen, and wind up hidden underneath the spreader boots. I think I got them at Ace Hardware.

PS:
The clamp keeps the spreader tip from sliding down the shroud. Then I seized each tip to its cable clamp with stainless safety wire to prevent the tip from sliding up the shroud.

RichCarterParticipantThat’s probably better than a hose clamp. Next time I pull the mast, I think I’ll replace them.

I’ve been using cable clamps on both masts for years on Easy Reach and did seize them to prevent them from riding up and have never seen them ride up.

RichCarterParticipantI’m not sure how they could ride up, but seizing them won’t hurt.

I’m not sure how or if they could ride up either, Rich, but the lee shroud is always a kind of loose when beating into a stiff breeze. Maybe the spreader tip could “jump” a bit in certain conditions. Anyway, as you say there is no harm in securing it, and maybe some good. It’s just something I was taught a couple of decades ago and kept doing.

Correction from Norris Larson on Easy Reach,
In following the thread today I noticed an error in my contribution. I do NOT seize the spreader tips to the cable clamp and have never seen them ride up.
